Exciting new bands of 2009

. The only 'new' band I can think of that's been hyped up so far this year are Glasvegas. Saw them in norwich a couple of weeks ago and they were awful. Turn the effects off and there would be nothing left.

Last year's next big thing, am I the only one who thinks they just sound like The House Of Love? (who I didn't really like).

I dunno about the effects criticism though, what if you turned the lyrics off?
Or the drums? - that's no way to think about things is it?

As for this year it would appear only unimaginative dullards still form bands.
When will the imaginative, creative or just demented start doing that again?

Rolo Tomassi

Caught this lot at a puregroove in store show last sunday. Bizarre range of influences. Very hardcore as well whilst looking very young and sweet.

i love turbulence

Saw them last night at the best gig I've been to in ages. They're not the sort of thing I'd listen to on record, but were very good live. Incredibly talentd kids and tighter than a ducks arse. Also on the bill were Fucked Up and the Bronx, who both put on stonking sets.

There is this song on Bbc6 they keep playing by a girl called LaRoux. It's electropoppy, I like it.

Don't know what her other stuff is like though.

I love synth-pop, but I really hate her voice .... horrid and screechy.

I am absolutely loving the Ladyhawke album though. 1982 all over again.

And just to add there is loads of great psychedelic/shoegazer music around at the moment. I love that type of music and last year defiantly provided quite a bit to enjoy.

Can you recommend any? I'm partial to a bit of My Bloody Slowdiveride. :)

That's why I like it! I like singing along in a ridiculous high voice.

Ladyhawke is a bit meh. I like it, but the novelty wore off pretty quick.

I've just signed this band. This is them playing in Madrid at the weekend.

Mattias, the singer, is a proper star. Charismatic, eccentric...I mean what is he wearing in this clip?

:)

Moderat (Modeselektor + Apparat)

Melodramatic popular songs by two electronica giants, recorded in analog in Berlin's Hansa Tonstudio where Bowie had recorded Heroes.

Top stuff.

not sure how you define new, as this lot did have a single out last year (and have been around before with a previous name) - this year they are on the NME Radar tour, with an album in the summer

Magistrates

I think they are great.

Whitest Boy Alive

The new album is rather mellow and melodic, as you would expect from Erlend Øye.
Not really a new band but interesting development - from electronic band to band that uses no programming at all.

Yes I can, i spend vast amounts of time looking for good shoegazer "type" bands, heres a few that have only been round for a few years (I'll leave the oldies out).
Also these cover a pretty wide amount of genres but they all have a shoegazer vibe (if that makes sense?)

A Place To Bury Strangers
Atlas Sound
Auburn Lull
Bardo Pond (not new or "shoegazer" but definatly in that orbit and suprisingly few people know about them)
Bethany Curve (been around for ages but still making records)
Brightblack Morning Light
Cloudland Canyon
Crystal Stilts
Grouper
Khonnor
M83
Mazinga Phazer
Pia Fraus
Robin Guthrie (yep, the guy from Cocteau Twins, his solo album is a massive bit of instrumental space rock)
Screen Vinyl Image
Serena Maneesh
Televise
The Clientele
The Year Zero
Ulrich Schnauss
Vivian Girls

There are more but its late and I only seem to have selective viewing when going through my music folders.

If you like MBV style of stuff you could also check out Astrobrite and The Telescopes. Both bands are incredibly noisy just like MBV. I kind of feel that MBV are more in the genre of noise (just a bit more tuneful than other noise bands).
Also there are now bands doing electronic shoegazer music which is pretty cool. I came across Auburn Lull the other day and I really like it. Reminds me a bit of Seefeel which is never a bad thing. Oh yeah, if you dont already know them check out Seefeel. I wish they would get back together. The advances in technology would mean their music could really kick some arse now.

I fucking love these guys - rude-ass production with some of the best bassliens around and a healthy sense of humour. I suspect one of my recent sets (an hour of full on cheezy mid 90s happycore) had stongly influenced their production style (well, Tich's at least) so expect some seriously up tempo chipmunk vocal style business from them shortly.

I like them so much in fact I've booked them twice.
