I think the timing is actually most closely related to the conclusion of the selection meeting for the neighbouring constituency of Calder Valley (the town of Hebden Bridge and environs).
A local candidate supported by Alice Mahon, Janet Oosthuysen, was democratically selected in July 2008, but then subjected to a campaign against her by the Labour right wing focussing on a minor misdemeanour for which she received a police caution some years previously. The Labour NEC blocked her selection and the selection was rerun. A second selection was held and another local candidate, well known left winger Susan Press, was the front runner and supported by Alice. Susan won the selection meeting two weeks ago by a comfortable 2-1 majority, but was shocked to discover that the postal votes had been harvested heavily in favour of her opponent who was the narrow winner.
According to Susan Press's Blog Alice Mahon expressed her desire to resign from the Labour Party to her last year, but reading between the lines reluctantly stayed in the party so as not to disrupt Susan Press's chances in the selection. Now that that chance is over, there was little to stop Alice declaring her public disgust with the whole New Labour thing and resign from the party on principle.
