Ex MI5 Boss says ID cards "useless" against terrorists.

"It would be better that the Government recognised that there are risks, rather than frightening people in order to be able to pass laws which restrict civil liberties, precisely one of the objects of terrorism: that we live in fear and under a police state."

Good on her, it's about time more people started speaking out against this government. Even recently we hear of more abuses of our liberties, it's never ending.

Here are a few of the latest goodies neo-labour have in store for us:

National Identity Card Act

Requirements to report changes of address, handing over biometric details, system of fines for non-compliance and incorrect data. Holding an ID card or registering onto the National ID register could be made a requirement of obtaining any other document.

Even more anti-terror bollocks

Potential Ban on Photography under new Terrorism Legislation (police will interpret whether people have good reason, so expect widespread abuse. Snatch film and camera now ask questions later). So much for a free press providing a watchful eye on the police.

Borders Citizenship and Immigration Bill

New Customs and Exercises officials with powers of arrest and search etc, reporting directly to the Home Office and Secretary of state (politically controlled police force) Citizens

Coroners and Justice Bill

Data Sharing Orders created under clause 152 allowing government departments to circumnavigate data protection act and request any data about you from any other governmental department for any purpose. E.g. medical records sent to benefits offices to check up on people claiming incapacity.

Communications Bill

Plans to retain all our communications data as part of the Interception Modernization Program (IMP)

Never even mind the Criminal Justice Act, Serious Organized Crime Act, and all the existing Anti-Terror legislation.

Let's just hope a resistance can be built around things like the convention on modern liberty.

What I wonder is when people will say enougth is enougth. Are we really going to contiune to sit back and watch whilst years of our rights that people fought to perserve are taking away from us?

Former head of MI5 accuse goverment of explointing fear of terror

A former head of MI5 has accused the government of exploiting the fear of terrorism and trying to bring in laws that restrict civil liberties.

In an interview in a Spanish newspaper, published in the Daily Telegraph, Dame Stella Rimington, 73, also accuses the US of "tortures".

The Home Office said it was vital to strike a right balance between privacy, protection and sharing personal data.

It said any policies which impact on privacy must be "proportionate".

Dame Stella, who stood down as the director general of the security service in 1996, has previously been critical of the government's policies, including its attempts to extend pre-charge detention for terror suspects to 42 days and the controversial plan to introduce ID cards.

"It would be better that the government recognised that there are risks, rather than frightening people in order to be able to pass laws which restrict civil liberties, precisely one of the objects of terrorism - that we live in fear and under a police state," she told the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia.

It's nothing we didn't already know. But it's nice to see it get MSM attention. :)

Drip, drip, drip. Banning loopjob Dutch MPs from the entering the UK? Yeah, fuckwit, on you go. Locking up "terror suspects" without charge? Yeah, I'm not one of them, go on. House arrest? Aye, nae bother. ID cards for foreigners? Yup. ID cards for airport staff? Aye, on you go.

This is how the government operates. Bit by bit by bit by bit, until we're worn down.

Tony McNulty does his little labour bully boy act in response...

He said the Government had got the right balance between civil liberties and security and there was a "strong tradition of civil liberties in this country and one we cherish". - Which is why we have created lot's of laws that erode them - nice

"Even to use such language so loosely plays in to the hands of our enemies. Of course we should have a full and frank debate, but to use such terms does not help the debate at all." A full and frank debate in which we are critical of the language used for 'playing in to the hands of our enemies'.

As far as i'm concerened my biggest enemy is neo-labour.
