Evolution Festival - Newcastle

I miss that - I miss it enough to remember it with fondness but do I ever want to go back... pfft?

Every xmas I go back and the time it takes to get sick of it diminishes every time.

It's not for me now - but it may well be again in the future.

I know what you're saying and it is better than it used to be since the NE is a strong labour ground, they've pumped millions into Newcastle, where as Northumberland is either Tory in Morpeth or Libdem in the rural communities. Alan Beith!

It is a cliche but Northumberland 'clips your wings', dude. Why did I move down south five years ago? Because I was sick of the NE and the prospect of working in the public sector or for local government. I still love Northumberland, more than any other county - it isn't stuffed full of tourists yet and as you said the beaches are probably the best in England. I never took advantage of it or appreciated it because it was there all the time, bit like living at a theme park... you've slides, rollercoasters and candyfloss, but when it is there on your door stop each day.

I probably had a better / safer childhood than many kids living in cities. I could swim in rivers, make dens or go stomping around the countryside, but when you've grown past that, there's very little else to do in Northumberland. Beautiful part of the country for two reasons: It looks beautiful and its rural; that does not make it a good place for to live, for me anyway.

I was talking to a lass at a party on Saturday night, she was born and bred in London. Had only been abroad to holiday resorts but never really left London. She loved the idea of the countryside, the romanticism of rivers, fields and huge open space with no one around. I miss that - I miss it enough to remember it with fondness but do I ever want to go back... pfft?

Went to Portsmouth last Wednesday for the day to see Char' - it seemed very quiet after living in London.

I've rambled on a bit, sorry :o

you had a wicked job in northumberland with your brother's mate, i wouldn't live in northumberland cos i don't wanna live in countryside, but calling it shite is idiotic, it's shite being poor everywhere

there are wicked forest and beach parties in the summer, and rothbury has some of the best mushroom fields in the british isles

the council and the police are generally really cool with the free parties as well, the ones i've been at when they have turned up they have been really nice, and apparently the council are sound as fuck to the people who put them on (since they can't afford to do anything for the younguns themselves i spose

hmm... kind of true, I reckon most of those parties will be the ones I've run, and we have / had built up a decent rep and understanding with police etc. unfortunately last one we did 2 years ago in alnmouth they've still got a file open on one of our guys for, partly because it had got a bit big (1000ish peeps), and partly because some fuckwits turned up the week after, trashed the place and buggered off, council had our names from the week before, had to be seen to be doing something, so went after us.

so we moved to druiridge bay last year <alledgedly>

I do love them beaches like:cool:

I'm so excited about this - mainly because it's free and good - whoever they have sorting the line up has done nicely imo. It's a good range from fairly well known to obscure.

I'm just crossing everything that it runs well and is a good day for all :)

I get in at ten to one in the morning on saturday, freespirit - probably too late for the gig you're working on. Are you working on the festival too???

our party's on til either 3 or 4 (we're applying for 4am licence, should have got it by then) it's less than a 10 min walk from station so if you fancy a bit of party action after you get off the train, send me a pm and we'll sort you out.

I'm not working evolution, coz I'm running the green festival the weekend after, worked the first one which was er interesting (i had the power to close the entire thing down, and almost had to:D )

Not sure exactly what I'm up to that weekend, got offers to play in 2 different castles on sat, but it'll probably turn into quite a long praty weekend and I'll prob miss most of evo like last year. If you fancy seeing the underground newcastle while you're up as well as the corporate side of it, feel free to tag along for a bit:cool:

was that you? I read about that in the gazette.

wasn't there supposed to be one (an organised 'proper' one) near morpeth this year, the south end, towards newcastle.

dunno we def got a letter in complaining the year before that I actually replied to in print... it'd make sense if we were reported in the paper for the one the year before, there were shitloads of people there, even the local butcher turned up to run a fucking barbeque (which he left on the beach afterwards:mad: )

did they point out that the beach was cleaner after we left than before we got there? we had to take off something like 40 bags of rubbish:eek:

an organised proper one.... piss ups and breweries run couldn't...;)

yeah twas us btw:cool:

Well they always fuck it up, look at the love parade - they seemed to forget that people may drive to the city ffs.

it wasn't the most heart warming thing i have read in the gazette, the usual bollocks of 'ravers descend on tranquil village' and the usual mention of drugs and mess, so no, they never said the beach was cleaner. Just mentioned there was complaints and police were called.

but have you ever read the northumberland gazette? my old man was in it when kids nicked the garden gate FFS.

only read it the one time someone told me we were in the letters page + my response.

problem is that there's obviously a period when the beach is still fairly trashed, but it's usually pretty much sorted by midday, and fully clear when we leave coz I do the final sweep myself. Personally I reckon if we're daft enough to lug a sound system (well actually it was 3 rigs that year), geodomes, generator and record bags across half a mile of sand dunes & back + litter pick the entire site & make sure the rigs are small enough that we get no noise complaints we should be given some kind of freedom of the beach for providing the best night out of the year for most of the local kids for free, not threatened with prosecution for ents without a licence.

anyway we don't do beach parties anymore, we hold sand castle building competitions;)

Did you ever hear anything about the KLF and the gazette?

* THE K FOUNDATION - According to the Northumberland Gazette, which we trust implicitly in all things, TBPFKAKLF (the bizarre people formerly known as the KLF) were planning to build a pyramid out of bricks somewhere near the castle.

This other festival that everyone's complaining about is in Matfen (which makes Wooler look like New York City)

Yeah, Northumberland is rural but it takes me 30 mins top to commute into Newcastle...from Chester Le Street it took 25 mins, its worth 5 minutes.

And looking outside on a day like this, there's no place I'd rather be in the world!
