Everything is Borrowed - Mike Skinner

I think he's alright. He's not making any claims to be the world's most verbally dextrous by any means - fairplay that he's got an original sound and his own style for a change.

If Kained doesn't like him then he must be doing something right.
:D

what uk hip hoppers rap american???

I can't think of anyone off the top of my head with the possible exception of rhyme fest and everyone over here hates him.

Again, they're not doing the same thing. It's like saying I'd rather listen to Autechre rather than Justice cos they do it properly.
Funny you should say that, cos I'd go along with that :p

Whatever he's trying to do, he's failing as he sounds inept and cringeworthy

I think i would rather listen to the streets then brain tax or roots barring a few songs.

I really cant stand roots manuva anymore. Thought he was amazing when witness the fitness first came out.

& with the exception of arrest the presidnet and eschueme bollocks to brain tax and his whole back packing label.

I'd prefer to listen to Autechre rather than Justice too, but I wouldn't criticise justice for not sounding like Autechre.
I guess not, but I remain confused as to exactly what he's trying to do - whatever it is, it's irritating and I'd rather not hear it.

Then your chatting shit.

Professor green, kano, dizzie, blade, brain tax, roots manuva, taz could never be anything other then english.

Oh s.a.s sound american but what can you do.

I think what I mean is that he's created a delivery and style that just sounds like where he's from and I like that, it seems very honest and frank and his personality comes across. Dizzee Rascal has this too.

He doesn't much sound like where he's from though :p

Well he does have a weird blend of accents, but that makes perfect sense given his background. So what?

Nothing - I was just being pedantic when PieEye says he sounds like where he's from, when he sounds like he could be from anywhere - maybe this is his appeal

But he doesn't sound like he could be from anywhere, he clearly sounds like a mixture of Brummie and estuary / London, which is where he's from.

So if you're going to be a pedant, get it right :)

I heard a Brummie accent so assumed that was where he was from.

Look, I don't know loads about him but I do think he has more integrity than the bulk of mainstream hip hop I come across and he is a hell of a lot more relevant to me and therefore I like him. I also like his weirdy weirdy beats and backing music - they are cool

I'm bored of this thread now.

Much as I hate to agree with that cunt Petridish, but he got it right on the South Bank Show. Lots of those BRIT school moppets like Kate Nash et al think that being mundane makes you artsy and observant, but it entirely misses the point. Skinner hones what he says so through pinpointing something mundane (the way someone moves their foot or tilts their head or something) it speaks volumes about what they're thinking or experiecing. There's a genuine skill to that, and it's hard to get right, and in my opinion he does.

Well I downloaded the album and it's sounding very unimpressive tbh. He's just doing another ripoff of The Streets, some of it sounds like Alabama3

Some of the songs are great but most of them aren't, and the best thing about him was always the production but some of them sound like he did them using keyboard presets

I don't think he should be allowed to make albums cos they always ruin the singles. He has done some amazing singles but all of the albums put you off him cos they have really wanky tracks on. The second one he sort of got away with it cos it was a sort of play, but the other ones didn't

There's 3 tracks i really like and some i think are pretty average. Still worth it for 'The strongest person i know' which is a sweet track
