So you do think of yourself as a one-man 'Leftist group' then?!revol68 said:are u honestly trying to claim your post wasn't in response to me?
icepick said:Yeah sorry, you've got him entirely the wrong way round. In his own inimicable way what he does is take the piss out of lefties who support "oppressed" "nations'" teams on "political" grounds.

Plus all th elinks between the two.
Th eproblem I see with this petty nationalisn jibe is that if it's suppressed and there's no outlet for a bit of respect for how you feel, i.e. whatever tribe, community. religion you identify with , it doesn't go away , it simmers.
Look at the break up o fthe USSR or Yougoslavis, the dividing lines were there like it or not, they festered and manifest themselves in horrific ways.
Give me a bit of flag waving anyday.
revol68 said:absolute nonsense, your taking nationalisms as some sort of inate drive rather than complex constructs and subjective narratives. The idea that the former Yugoslavia went to pieces was because the only think keeping natural ethnic enemies apart was strong authoritarianism. That is complete tripe that serves to stop any proper analysis of the situation, the role of local elites and oppurtunist ex communists in reconstructing nationalist histories and seeking to expand their own interests.
What's this got to do with a football game?revol68 said:absolute nonsense, your taking nationalisms as some sort of inate drive rather than complex constructs and subjective narratives. What a dreadful outbreak of disgusting nationalism!Oxpecker said:At the end of the match the Welsh fans were chanting Euskadi! Euskadi! and the Basques were coming back with Wa -ales! Wa-ales!

Oxpecker said:I had tremendous fun over in Bilbao, the atmosphere was crackling before and after the game. The game itself was of a surprisingly high standard and, of course, we won. At the end of the match the Welsh fans were chanting Euskadi! Euskadi! and the Basques were coming back with Wa -ales! Wa-ales!
Enough to bring a tear to a glass eye![]()

Respect that flag!Oxpecker said:There were plenty of Welsh flags and singing around the ground.
