When Putin told the Russian ultras to leave the welsh fans alone I was kind of thinking naiveley that maybe they would listen to him. After all, why would they want to attack Wales fans?

Whatever influence Putin may or may not have, I think now that the Forward Smolov may have undermined things with his latest statement.

Smolov: "There are images where you see the english and the welsh on many occasions clearly provoking our fans. If they want to fight then they should do so outside the stadium."

That looks like a green light to me.

 

Mind you, I get the sneaking suspicion, that unlike other countries, the russian state isn't as much embarrassed as it is pleased to have the opportunity to stoke up a form of aggressive nationalist sentiment within its population.

I dunno how true it is though typically with this type of tale I'd take it with a shovel full of salt though last week a load of random England firms, predominately from the Midlands though with millwall and Huddersfield in the mix somehow managed to meet with the Russian lads accidentally prior to a planned meet and smashed them all over the place.
