Ethiopian

It might be worth trying the one opposite Jamm too - I'd be interested to know how it is. I bloody love Eritrean food.
Maybe I'll do that then - less distance to waddle over afterwards :D

So, is it pretty much the same as Ethiopian food?

Asmara Sounds better so far.
Not for my budget ;)

Asmara must have gone up loads since I was last there which was a couple of years ago admittedly. I hope they're doing ok in spite of the rent hikes on C'harbour lane....

Don't worry, all the boys love a cheap date.

I pass it often and it seems busy....I'm glad, they're a lovely family.

That was the price even 4 years ago for that particular dish.. but it is just that particular dish - sort of like a mezze - for want of a better word.... the individual dishes are much cheaper!

They all basically do the same thing.. there's usually a choice of about 5-6 vegetarian dishes which can be bought seperately, or as a sort of selection. They tend to be similar dishes - although Ibex used to change it depending on what veg were in season.

So you could probably go to Asmara and spend the same amount of money as in any of the others, as long as you don't go for that dish.

The other noticeable difference between Asmara and the others is that Asmara is much better known, has the Time Out credentials and is right in the heart of Brixton "club/pub land" etc and tends to cater mostly for English/Western people (whenever I've been in there it's been noticeably white) as opposed to Adulis which tends to be mostly black and seemingly Eritrean/Ethiopian.

That's because the proprietress of the Asmara got pissed off with Ethiopian and Eritrean single blokes filling the place out and buying only the occasional coffee and using it like their personal social club and vibing out white people so she chucked them all out. I do see Eritrean families in there though....

I'm sure there are. It is a lovely place and by no means do I mean to denigrate it in any way. :) I have noticed with Eritrean restaurants that there are often HUGE family parties in them. Whenever I've gone with gaijinboy to Adulis/Ibex (RIP) we have always been noticeable by a) being white and b) being just the two of us rather than a motely crue of many with several children in tow! :D Ibex used to do late night live music too and it was quite the party! It reminded me of being in Spain - we'd be finishing up dinner and suddenly all these people with babies would arrive and just be warming up for a night out! :D

I'm just giving you the gossip because I know loads of Ethiopians and Eritreans because my mum was guardian to Ethiopian (Eritrea didn't exist till later) siblings in the late 60s early 70s so I know loads of people from that neck of the woods as our house was a sort of Horn of Africa hub for years.....

 :)

Asmara is vegan friendly - order the vegi mesob for two and get a wiiicked vegan meal for two.

Two types of Lentils, spinach, chick peas + potato 'n onions come on that lovely etheopian pancake thing.

Then order ruffneck coffee with popcorn for desert!

I live pretty much opposite the Jamm and have not noticed anything- probably me being blind!

Had another look today.. it's called Dahlak! :) Almost opposite Jamm but very slightly further north.
