ETA Bomb Madrid

Out of curiosity, how was this data collected and what was the question asked?
Batasuna used to get about 10% of the vote in the Basque Country* before it was banned. Some supporters of radical Basque Nationalism do not support ETA's campaign of violence. That is my basis for saying that <10% of people in the Basque Country support what ETA does.

* By the Basque Country I mean the three provinces of the Spanish Basque Country: Vizcaya, Guipúzcoa & Alava. I do not mean that radical Basque Nationalism - Batasuna and the like - have anything like as much support in the French Basque Country or in Spanish Navarra. The country claimed by radical Basque nationalism would consist of all those (five) places.

Doesn't that pretty much rest on the assumptions that everybody who supports ETA's campaign voted for Batasuna and that support for ETA hasn't significantly changed since 2003? Pretty dodgy assumptions, IMO.

Not saying that ETA enjoy any kind of mass support, mind, I don't know either way. I just don't think that you're line of argument is particuarly sound.

1. I do indeed assume that people who agree with ETA voted for Batasuna. (Similarly, I think that IRA supporters voted for Sinn Fein.) Who do you imagine they would vote for?

2. I know of no reason to think that ETA's base of support has grown (or, for that matter, shrunk) in the last couple of years. Can you provide one?

3. Sadly, I'm not sure that you'd be right to doubt that ETA has 'mass support'. It depends what you mean by 'mass', I suppose. They have a solid base of support which is not small. I gather they can and do draw on the militant rad. Basque Nat. cachorros [puppies] - who engage in street-fighting, arson, intimidation of non-nationalists etc - whenever they need new recruits for ETA.

Not every person that supported the IRA votes SF for numerous reasons such as the Abstention policy up until 1986 and disenchantment as when they do get voted in unionists wont share power etc. Im sure similar reasons why many are put off voting batasuna as they will see it as a 'wasted vote' even hough they support the broad objectives and will find the smae problems SF have had in regrads to parliamentary politics.

I dont exactly think voting behaviour is an acurate gauge for support tbh.

3 + 2 + 1 does not equal 5....

radical basque nationalism has no overt support in the polls in france, indeed they don't get any votes, but it does not mean that they aren't individuals out there prepared to help ETA.

it does not mean they do not share the same ultimate ideal.

very true but I would bet it's one of those kind of vague things that has next to fuck all impact on their day to day lives, other than when ETA bring alot of shit on them.

Did anyone suggest it did?

I referred to five places that would together compose the country the rad. Basque Nats want:
*Vizcaya
*Guipúzcoa
*Alava
*French Basque Country
*Spanish Navarra

I've no idea what other place you're talking about.

Last night, ETA bombed a post office in some place called Igorre in Vizcaya. There was lots of damage, but there were no injuries. Last Tuesday, ETA did the same in post offices in Alsasua (somewhere in Navarra) and Zumarraga (somewhere in Guipúzcoa).

It seems that, at the moment, the etarras like bombs that cause damage and inconvenience rather than carnage - but I don't suppose it'll be long before they go back to killing people.
