Errr... Mexico?

It's tricky ground for sure. 9 times out of 10 you can simply bribe yourself out of any shenanigans. Why you should even be up to no good in the first place is beyond me

You don't have to be up to no good. I was mugged by police in broad daylight on Ave Revolucion in Tijuana. I was just walking along, they pulled up, jumped out, stopped and searched me and took my money. Happens all the time.

Come on! You said something well cocky to them didnt you ;)

You wouldnt have been able to help yourself!

Tijuana is an armpit! lol The rest of Mexico is just like any other third world country. Baja even takes dollars. I used to go all the time. I remember crossing the border from San Diego so I could go drinking before I was 21. but eh. to each their own.

My boyfriend's just emailed me saying he can get us cheap flights to Mexico for this weekend, but I have to decide in the next half hour if I want to go.

Isn't that a bit short notice? Do I need injections?
depends where you go re injections

I had injections when i went

but what about swine flu? no injections for that

Never had any injections in the 4 yrs I lived there.

Swine flu? Remember theres 26 million people in Mexico City (at least). More people have probably been killed by pigs than swine flu in the same period.

Corruption. Hell yeah, There is a big campaign against it. Sure, you can (sometimes) bribe your way out of most anything (50 usd got a friend of mine off for crashing into a cop car drunk at the wheel!). Getting less common though.
The law is the Napoleonic code - guilty till proven innocent. Nowt to do with corruption

Mexico is wonderful. Go if you even get a sniff of a chance....

To four shotgun-wielding guys in ski-masks and bullet-proof vests? As I recall I said "que pasa muchachos, no quiero problemo, donde es mi dinero, adios."

Not in the border towns. The Tijuana police are so corrupt that the government sent in the federales, who confiscated their guns (to examine for links to crime scenes--crimes committed by the police) and armed them with sling-shots instead, presumably in order to take the piss. This seems to have set off a war between the two police forces. Anyway, they'll shake down a lone gringo as a matter of course, you assume it'll happen whenever you go.

when i went it was a a nice trip

driving round the yucatan mainly

i loved chichen itza and uxmal could have spent days there especially with the right books at hand

also i was demonically lucky.... i happened to go to chichen itza on the day of the spring equinox

I spent a couple of months in Mexico with no injections. It's the best country I've been to so far and I'd happily die there one day. Hope you decided to go for it, I know someone who flew to Cancun for about 80 quid once. The trick is to get the FUCK out of Cancun ASAP and get yourself round the yucatan. I love this country, Pip.

It's depressing that mexico sits next to the wealthiest nation on earth and can be considered third world.

Yeah it is. Just as depressing as the subjugation of foreign cultures via Colonialism. Assumed heathenism thus justified exploitation under the banner of expansion for profit and power.

This line of thought is depressing. Let's change the subject.
