Epic street battle as private guards try to fine man for dropping cigarette butt

i was in bradford yesterday to watch the lions.

i have never seen a place so filthy in all my life. It was actually a bit tragic. there were whole areas just covered in discarded stuff. looks like the council has just abandoned it. just caked in the stuff. must be awful for the people who have to live there.

My b-I-l is from there, it's a very depressing place :(

I'd have just walked away. The guy just seems content to let them try and detain him until the police show up.

No way I'd have been intimidated by fake security pretending they have authority to stop and fine people.

He isn't exactly a very passionate advocate of himself lol

it's incredible, isn't it? i got htere early for a long walk around. i was actually gobsmacked at how run down that place is in areas. it reminded me almost of thsoe documentries about Detroit etc. mile up mile of boarded up old factories, waste lands of dumped shit, swirling hurricanes of litter. how can a house in those areas be worth anything? how would it ever sell? industrial decline. square mile upon square mile of neglect. easily the most run down place i have ever seen in the uk, and i've been all over. the difference between the SE and that place is just two different worlds and its out of order.

How fitting that rubbish Tory Britain is covered in rubbish

It's basically dead, his family still live there, they are teachers, hardly any jobs in private industry at all, there is no equivalent in the south east. Yet Harrogate is an easy bike ride away, as posh as Kensington. Bonkers.

you'd except it from a worker, but not from the vast, vast majority of people who don't want you to sling your fag butts in their towns/areas, etc?

I don't believe the vast vast majority of people really care. I have been dropping fag butts for nearly 30 years, I don't ever recall even a dirty look.

I don't think many people care in public places—the proof being that there's not really any social pressure not to do it.

Personally I don't think anyone should drop fagends in the street. I'd like it to be common that people have those little pocket ashtrays, so that they can put fagends in them until they get to a bin. But in the grand scheme of things it's not a massive issue.

... given the lack of public bins in many places and the fact that you can hardly put a fag end in your pocket and carry it around until you find one...

Yes, you can. Stomp on rollie, pick it up with a bit of paper hankie or similar, and put in pocket. It's kind of important to extinguish it properly, though, otherwise you get a little fire in your pocket. I know this.

I like Hong Kong on the fag issue; quite large fine for dropping, but large ashtrays on bins every 100m. Wound up to filth by sparking a fag with a match and not binning it but not dropping it either until finished the smoke.

I got stopped by one of those fuckers outside Angel tube about 4 years ago. It was actually a spliff butt that I'd just discarded. I asked him if he was a policeman, he said no so I told him to fuck off and went in the tube station. Didn't take 15 minutes.

Lol, love it.

Pcso walks up to you when youre a bit drunk and asks if "y'alright mate" or "can you not smoke there mate" and you can see their heart break a bit when you say fuck off you're not even a real copper.

People are not going to do this though because it makes your pockets stink of fags, any more than they spit chewing gum into the wrapper so they can throw it away later. They could but they don't and they won't.

Japan also has quite strict public smoking laws but loads of places to smoke. It seems to work in Tokyo. You're not allowed to smoke while walking in a lot of areas, but you can find an ashtray to hang around (usually near a street drinks machine) without too much trouble.

I'm not risking setting myself on fire just to appease someone's petty obsession that a tiny bit of paper and fluff lying on the pavement seriously impedes their quality of life. Anyway if you leave a bit of baccy in your butt it will probably get picked up by someone that needs it in a busy city centre.

Yeah, that guy. The thing is, when he's not winding up PCSOs and coppers i.e. most of the time, he just has this dull spiel about consumerism addressed to people going shopping, which is really cringey sixth form stuff. Through a megaphone.

The video is one of his better days then.:)
I had a run in with that wanker in yellow some time ago in camden. He is a nasty cowardly fucker.

I'm sure a lot do. Anyway, I've usually got a wee pocket ashtray. In fact, LIDL has little tins of mints that work very well as pocket ashtrays. Of course, one has to eat all the mints first, which is a great sacrifice. :)

There was interesting programme about this on radio

Litter, Costing the Earth - BBC Radio 4

In other countries they deal with this differently. In one they have litter ambassadors who instead of fining people engage them in conversation asking them politely not to do it. Apparently it works.

Another person in programme lived in France for years. When came here he was shocked at the amount of litter people drop compared to France. And goes around himself to pick it up.
