Enya - Crap/Not Crap?

There's a mashup of Orinoco Flow vs Smack My Bitch Up around that's guaranteed raise a smile.

Apart from that she's rubbish and don't waste bandwidth downloading the remix albums that are floating around the net.

Got a link for that?

Hmmm, looked for it on gybo and it seems to have gone (but a lot of people looking for it), there are two versions, you want the one by Apeboy . . . the only place I can currently see it is as part of a mix here http://cravo.dyndns.org/mixes/

Else PM me & I'd be happy to mail it to you

Why are you ashamed of your own taste in music?

And if you are ashamed why are you telling everyone?

Did you know that enya was originally created by lab tech's in california to work as a musical valium for stressed out mums, but some people with dubvious taste in music actually started liking and buying it and propelled her into a household name. 'tis true i tell you. ;)

I have to shoot this rumour down in flames sorry. She grew up in Doneghal and my mate (and quite a few of his mates) 'knew' her (nudge nudge wink wink) when they were young-ish people.

More of a Beth Orton man meself.

Our name is Clanad
We sing pretentious songs in gaelic

This breathy style is not intentional
It's because we're all
asthmatic

oh come on, there's musical philistinery, and there's just plain common sense...you are clearly not thinking straight pacific. Enya is now, as she was in the beginning, and forever shall be, a huge stinking pile of horse crap.

anyone remember that southpark episode where some old man said being elderly was like listening to enya in a dark room? :D

That's an opinion.

Article in the beeb today about Adele being the UK's richest female musician with a fortune of £85 Million - yet this is still less than Enya's fortune estimated at £91 Million!

Who's buying all these Enya records? I don't even hear Orinoco Flow all that often these days and couldn't name another tune. Yet I doubt a day goes by when I don't hear an Adele number. There are presumably hundreds of thousands of Enya fans still around. Are they all as reclusive as she is?

Is it anything to do with people not buying music in the same way they used to?

Yes, there are obviously loads of Enya fans still around, unless Enya has taken to bank breaking.

Have to say too, if you don't like Enya you'll only know her shit tunes, the ones that got radio play, I'm not a fan but was introduced to her when I was a kid, I still remember my friend writing "Enya" in pencil on her shelves in her bedroom to remember the name

So yeah I like Enya but Orinocho Flow makes me want to rip my face off.

I can only presume Enya has a significant generation of middle-aged types who still buy CDs and she has a pretty favourable record contract - or has her own label by now or whatever. I mean she doesn't even tour, and I can't recall much of her music being licensed for film/TV for sync royalties (unless I'm hugely mistaken).

She is surely an anomaly in the world of music. Stupendously rich, non-touring, reclusive, only one or two top 10 singles and barely any mainstream success besides Orinoco Flow. I almost admire her.

What's wrong with buying CDs?

Here's a clue to her wealth:
Enya is known for her private lifestyle and has yet to undergo a concert tour. Her discography includes eight studio albums that have sold 26.5 million RIAA-certified albums in the US and an estimated 75 million worldwide, making her one of the world's best-selling artists. She is Ireland's best-selling solo artist, and has sung in ten languages.
Solo act too, so no royalty sharing!
Kerrrrching!

skyscrapers post "I can only presume Enya has a significant generation of middle-aged types who still buy CDs" seemed to be a bit dismissive. Of those of us who are a bit set in our ways...

It's not dismissive, it's just a fact, middle aged isn't an insult, you made that leap.

Being solo probably makes little or no difference. The lion's share is the song pubishing, which in a band can still be down to just one person. There is a far far smaller share in mechanicals but unless she played all the instruments being solo makes no difference.

That's what I meant: AFAIK she writes the tunes herself, not with a band so the lolly is ALL HERS! ALL OF IT!

She also plays most of the instruments too. So more dosh on top!
