Really you are better just looking at a census to see who was living at a certain house at a particular time..

censuses covered people who were *there* on census day, not necessarily those who were living there. people who were just visiting caught too.

I googled it. The names didn't ring a bell, probably because I was 14 when the affair happened.

On reading the Wiki article, I though that Roberts had been treated extremely harshly and unjustly.

As you are all aware, I'm no bleeding heart liberal, but being refused parole at the age of 72, having served 42 years, is pandering to the most rabid of Daily Mail readers. Being finally released at 77 makes me absolutely ashamed of our justice system. If the decision was based on the newspaper reports, that is even more obscene, harassment was a criminal offence then as now, and a complaint would have resulted in a prosecution. That no such complaint was made, speaks volumes as to the extreme lack of veracity by the press. Of course, press behaving like scum seems to be the rule rather than the exception.

    That's terrible.

In British English the past participle of 'to shit' is 'shat'. US English uses 'shit' but also uses 'spit' for the past tense of 'to spit' which is clearly wrong.

Furthermore 'to shit oneself' refers to the soiling of underclothes, whereas Radcliffe removed her underwear before taking her shit.

FWIW, I very much blame the government for the problems of high net migration, and don't blame immigrants at all. The government makes the rules. Immigrants don't. Simple.

What problems? It’s not causing any problems.

There are existing problems that it’s slightly adding to but it is in no way responsible for those problems and reducing migration will not eliminate those problems. Increasing migration may even add to tax income to help deal with them.

So even you accept high net migration is making the housing crisis worse, if only slightly?

  28. Gromit

    Gromit International Man of Misery

Yep but on balance the benefits outweigh that.
However I don’t accept the label ‘high’.
We have roughly the level of migration we need to match growth.
In some sectors not enough. We actually need more in the health sector which Brexit has screwed for us.

I've been following this story over the last week or so. It seems like shit stirred up by our local right-wing rag. They started it by putting on an event at Wolverhampton's Literature Festival discussing his 'Rivers of Blood' speech. Then days later (almost as if it was planned!) the story about the plaque appeared. These articles are just from the last 5 days!

Enoch Powell: Rivers of Blood legacy debated at Wolverhampton Literature Festival
Enoch Powell: Shock! Horror! Intelligent debate lives on as protest falls flat
Express and Star comment: Is Enoch deserving of blue plaque?
Blue plaque plan for Enoch Powell in Wolverhampton
History society to consider call for Enoch Powell plaque
Should Enoch Powell have a blue plaque in Wolverhampton?

You'd be forgiven to think that they are divisive racist cunts with an ulterior motive.

What has actually happened is there has been an anonymous request for a plaque. There have been another 34 requests for plaques for other people to be placed in Wolverhampton too, but these have not been reported. Most people have said that it would be divisive, would get vandalised etc and the panel has said they will consider it as they will the other 34 requests.

Benefits to whom? The benefits have fallen overwhelmingly to landlords and bosses, the drawbacks to the poor.
