england's world cup 2018 bid

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euro_96

Although not all the games were sold out, the tournament had the highest aggregate attendance in championship history (1,276,000) and the highest average per game of 41,158 for the revised 16 team format with 31 games. Only Germany had had a higher average attendance in championship history with an average of 56,656 in 1988 but only staged 15 games in an 8 team championship.

That'll be why you didn't register the fact that plenty of games involving Italy, Germany etc didn't sell out at all then. Outside of games involving England and Scotland it was embarrassingly poorly attended

Terrible.

ETA: Bit slow...

Ah yes. Those games that were advertised as 'sold out' and then were played out in front of an empty Anfield Road End etc

to be fair though, if getting the world cup meant rovers got a new stadium then i'd be saying bring it on.

Where better to have a world cup than the home of the game?

An example of how England really needs to get over itself with this 'home of football' bollocks. I don't want it anywhere near here, it's a disgusting exhibition of commercialism and greed, only surpassed by the palm greasing and arse licking required to win the bid.

Fuck it.

Get over it yourself.

Ah, just cause you didn't enjoy it doesn't mean it was a pointless waste of time. And no, your comment wasn't any good.

I didn't say I didn't enjoy it, just pointing out it wasn't quite the unqualified success it's remembered as just because Wembley was filled for every game.

It would be brilliant, I'd love to see England host a world cup, we've already got everything required to do so, so why not.

Mini chief would be over the moon.

I remember it was touted as a great success both here and in Europe ??

*shrugs*

Check out Romania v Bulgaria at (I think) St James Park. Two years previously they'd been World Cup quarter finalists and semi finalists. Hagi, Stoichkov etc playing a in a well known *ahem* hot bed of football ( )

Nobody there

It was touted as a great success cos it made money. Never mind if it was accessible to people who wanted to go but didn't want to spend a fortune.

The move should ease some of the criticism aimed at Kirton's organisation about the number of empty seats around the grounds. The average attendance at the first eight games was officially 83 per cent of capacity. The real figure was somewhat less, due to the fact that foreign football federations had bought tickets on a non-return basis.

Those unsold tickets count as sold in attendance figures, but are represented by rows of empty seats in actuality.

That's a fair point tbh but I think it's going to be one wherever the world cup might be held. It's not like if it's held anywhere else the tickets will be cheap.

I think it's very likely that the tickets in England would be far more affordable to local people than they will be in South Africa next year.
