England vs South Africa

So KP gets his first test century against the Saffers. Great knock so far from him so far, 103 not out from 125 balls(13*4's, 1*6). Bell ably supporting KP on 63. Score 294-3 If these two can survive the new ball, then England will be well pleased with the position that they'll be in.

Very happy with that result today.

Now we want them to stay in until tea tomorrow, or perhaps a bit of rain, to ensure there's still play on Monday so I can go :D

Dunno if it was the slope or they're just undercooked, but the Saffie bowlers looked well below par today. The old adage about overseas players getting inspired by Lord's didn't vanish completely though, with a splendid ton from KPP :) now averaging 80 at Headquarters.

I know we should be happy 300+ after being inserted but it really is a cracking pitch so 500 would be nice. Forecast is poor for tomorrow and Sat though :(.

As for Fred, I don't want him batting in the top six really so perhaps drop Jimmeh (assuming he'll bowl crap again as is his wont) and keep the batsmen, I think we'll need them when SA do finally wake up. This is (again) assuming Fred can bowl some proper spells otherwise there's no point picking him at all.

There were questions being asked about them not having being able to prepared properly, but they said it didn't bother them, lol i bet they're going back on their words now.

Good batting performance.

But I was amazed at quite how egotistical KP was in the post-match chat, even for him. His greatest ever test day because the crowd cheered for him a lot. Hmm.

Whats so bad about that? He was just happy, let him enjoy it and stop moaning eh. Maybe you would understand if you scored a century v south africa there.

Agree. It's a slog-fest and I find it tedious, bowlers are just cannon fodder, there's not enough time for owt to happen. Even ODIs struggle to find one decent game in a series. What's worrying is T20 seems to be where the money is going so a nightmare scenario of youngsters in cricket trying to be the next Luke Wright rather than Alastair Cook might happen. Christ...

A day like today pisses on what most limited-overs cricket usually delivers.

But, you know, if it's your thing fine and it's clearly popular.

To me, by far and away the most vulnerable batsman in the line-up SHOULD be Vaughan. He hasn't played (consistently) well for years.

quite.

Lets not forget why 20/20 was invented - it is a Sky Sports creation, and errr why are Sky interested - £ only. They have no interest in the sport per se - they are doing a great job of ruining football - cricket seems to be next on the hit list. What sickens me more are the number of ex players falling over themselves to be part of it all...20/20 is selling cricket down the river before our very eyes.

luke fucking wright indeed.

vaughan normally saves his skin by scoring a well timed century just as the axe is being wielded...

:D

he is a good test captain though - that's why he's still there - he gets the best out of other players & that is really important

look at mike brearley...(vaughan is a much better player than brearley ever was also)

Twenty20 was first discussed way back in 1998 and was launched in 2003 by the ECB in response to falling attendance at county matches, way before Sky Sports took over the full rights to show cricket. If you want to blame someone, blame the ECB.

This is true - Brearley's test average was a lamentable 22. But Brearley didn't have a long test career - even his captaincy abilities couldn't justify carrying him as a failure of a batsman for ever.

Yup, sky aren't the main ones to blame here, though they're always an easy scapegoat.

and who were the more than willing facilitators?!

it was packaged up for TV - sky were/are the biggest broadcasters around. Q.E.D - they are equally as culpable.

Sky weren't the ones who started showing the IPL and paying loads of money for it. I understand they're scum, but in this situation they aren't the main ones to blame. They're just capitalizing on an opportunity more than anything.

Please, show me evidence of Sky "facilitating" Twenty20 cricket in 2003. It was packaged for TV by the ECB, who were desperate to reverse the falling attendance figures.

And I take it you don't want the free Sky I can get you then? ;)
