England vs. Pakistan third test

It's genuine affection, everyone loves him.

Sure. I guess it's not the crowds so much -- they no longer sound like jeers but cheers -- but more the media. Patronising idiots in the press, on radio and, to a lesser extent, on the telly.

That said, having him up for Sports Personaliity of the Year is the kind of self-consciously ironic, head-patting bullshit that the English love so much.

The media thing is annoying - remember when Nasser was England captain? There was more press on where his parents where from thanhis ability to do the job at first. It died down after a while...before it resurfaced again

To be fair, a lot of the current coverage is about how impressive his bowling has been (which is perfectly true). If he goes on as he's started, he'll have a glittering career in test Cricket imo.

I don't see why it's self-concscious, ironic or patronising. Monty has played a huge part in England achieving a great victory over international opponents (whom we have not beaten at home for years and years). He also looks like he will get better and better and could well propel England to the top of the ICC tables, given that the only thing the team has lacked in the last few years is a great attacking spinner.

Who else would you suggest for the award?
