England vs. Pakistan Fourth test

they probably didn't cheat but we don't have to go back far to find a Pakistani cheating, do we? When you have cheated you get assumed to cheat and Pakistan have done it too many times.

The Pakistanis should be punished severely for this.

For what? There hasn't been any conclusive proof shown that the Pakistanis have done anything by way of ball-tampering.

I dont have Sky TV but for what I have heard the umpires have proved the ball had been tampered with, it is possible in the run up to put a groove into the ball with the left hand making it possible to move more on the ground.
I hope it is proven they havent cheated for the good of cricket but if they have, then they should be punished.

I have had a few beers btw, I am sorry for upsetting anyone.

Mark.

How do you explain the fact that with nearly 30 tv cameras spread around the ground there has, as yet, been no footage found of Pakistani fieldsmen tampering with the ball?

They should be punished for not coming out on the field.

What a farce, though I agree with Dickie Bird (when interviewed on BBC) that the umpires have to be 100% positive that they have been deliberately doing this - and with TV coverage being what it is, it should be available.

If not, Hair and Doctrove should be put under the microscope themselves, in fact their refusal to come out after the situation was apparently resolved should guarantee that anyway.

We can't have people staying in the pavillion becuase they don't agree with the umpires. Similarly we can't have people coming out on to the field if they disagree with the umpires decsion that the match has been forfeited.

IMO do whatever the umpires say during the match, and talk about it afterwards.

According to Cricinfo, Mike Soper, Vice Chair of ECB says that the test will probably be called off (although that still leaves a rather knotty problem as to whether it's an England win or a draw). Although apparently, the ICC office is closed tomorrow due to a holiday in Dubai.

The match might be stripped of test status so that they can appoint (a) new umpire(s) to replace Darrell Hair who has gone home. Farce.

Breaking news

8.50pm The Test match has finally been called off after a farcical afternoon and evening on the fourth day. The actual result is, as yet, unknown, but we will keep you posted.

What a farce! IMO Inzaman should have led the Pakistanis from the field immediately after the ball was changed and you had the farcical situation of asking Pietersen which ball he wanted to play with if they were innocent of ball tampering,

It's strange with all the cameras at Test Grounds that despite the Sky Sports production team scouring all the footage from all their cameras that no evidence has been found, but it doesn't prove that it hasn't taken place either.

Either way the game of cricket and the people who shelled out for tickets for today have been shat upon (I assume myself and the others who have tickets for Monday will automatically get refunds as would have been the case if a result had been reached), either by Hair falsely accusing the Pakistanis of cheating, or by the Pakistanis tampering with the ball then kicking up a fuss when caught.

It's a real shame as the series had been conducted in a really good spirit on and off the pitch, despite what's previously happened against Pakistan and the current political situation.

The headline on Cricinfo now says the match could still be on. FFS why can't people make their minds up?

presenters on Sky said they had looked through loads of footage and found no proof of anyone tampering with the ball. They have about 26 camera's in the ground.

Make of that what you will........

Yes, BM. I made that point some hours ago.

Latest from Cricinfo:

9.10pm After the news that the Test was off there are again further conflicting reports coming out of the The Oval with sources saying the match is still on. The amazing events continue to unfold.

Well.. must admit that's the first time I can remember being gripped to the radio commentary while no play was going on :D

I think Mark Butcher had it right - the Pakistanis may well have a right to be aggrieved over the tampering allegations but that doesn't mean they can choose whether to come out to play or not, and certainly they had carried on playing immediately after it happened.

Could you imagine a football team refusing to come out for the second half?

Oh dear!

exactly

and why do many many people suspect the pakistanis of cheating? because they've done it year after year after year. So, Inzamam was so aggrieved at being accused? Did he feel the same horror 6 months ago that he couldn't bear to take the field?

what goes around come around.

This whole thing is such a mess. Four hours after play was officially suspended for the day and the test appears to be simultaneously on and off.

What a ridiculous spectacle though. Everyone thought when the umpires removed the bails that that meant the match had been forfeited, so why the hours of shillyshallying?

Sky Sports News are now reporting that the ECB have issued a statement saying the match is over and England have won. Not that there's anything on the Surrey CCC website which Monday ticket holders have been advised to check:rolleyes:

It was on the Beeb and Cricinfo too. Presumably people who have got tickets will get refunds.

I feel incredibly cheated by today. A day of no play because of rain I could take, but the pettiness that has led to this decision is just taking the piss.

Forty plus quid for a ticket? They can piss off next year. I never thought that professional cricket would take the same route as football, taking the punters for granted.

A bit more HERE.

ICC said:
ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed also spoke to umpire Darrell Hair by phone from Dubai.

Following these meetings the umpires decided that, having made the decision to award the match to England, to change that decision would not be in keeping with the Laws of Cricket. The ICC backs the decision of the umpires.

The issue of a charge or charges to be laid against Pakistan under the ICC's code of conduct will now be dealt with at the earliest possible opportunity. Pakistan has been charged under level two of the code of conduct, 2.10, which relates to changing the condition of the match ball.

Agree with agricola that Aggers is spot on with his comments, nevertheless a very sad day for cricket

Poor lack of spirit of the game from Pakistan, acting like sulky teenagers
Poor law that needs immediate review
Poor handling of the situation on the day by the Oval with no communication to the crowd

Generally poor. :(
