England vs. France

A couple of points. If you think last night's performance was the same old, same old, you're categorically wrong.

Watching England play a passing game lacking in incisiveness may well be as boring as watching England play a frantically ineffective direct style; but it is progress.

Secondly, there are very few English players up to the standard of international football.

Where are these great wingers who are going to take over from Beckham or Joe Cole?

Point me out an effective striker for Rooney to play off of.

There is absolutely no point in trying out any of Carson, Lennon, Johnson, Ashton, Green, Noble, Huddlestone etc... because they are simply not good enough.

The only real hopes we have coming up through the ranks are Ashley Young, Abgonlahor and Theo Walcott. And of those three the only one who really has the technique for the highest level of international football is Young, the other two rely on their pace.

Same old in terms of results...it's clear the older crop of players can't change to a new system so bring in Young, Agbonlahor, Bentley and Walcott to the squad of 15. IMO the first three should be starting.

Agree that Ashton, Lennon and the others simply aren't international class...although Huddlestone is still young and could prove usefull if Hargreaves or Barry are injured.

Bentley was shit last night. His biggest contibution was indulging in a little petulant pushing action. I doubt he's going to pull up trees internationally

Rooney can't play up top by himself. We had no width and were predictible as fuck.

Really shit game from both sides it was quite frankly embaressing.

Owen's pass towards the end was utter shite - as was the crossing.

When the ball was put in - it was a shite ball - when the ball wasn't crossed in, it should have been.

The team seemed like more interested in holding on to the ball than scoring even though they were 1-0 down.

Exactly.

Bentley's a strange character. He's supposed to be one of the more intelligent English footballers and always comes across as reasoned and sensible in interviews, but on the pitch he sometimes goes a bit Premiership.

As for his ability. There's no doubting that he's one of the very few with the necessary technique. At Arsenal they were preparing him to take over from Bergkamp.

Witness this stunning chip: http://www.4shared.com/file/40557990/e592a33/Bentley_vs_MBoro_04.html

But at Blackburn he seems to have been turned into a bit of a one trick pony. He plays so direct, all the time, it can't be good for his development.

Im a Scotland supporter - BUT - jaundiced opinions aside, I think Rooney is in many ways finished as an International player who will reach the dizzy heights etc etc - any national team worth its salt knows how he plays and how he reacts and sets out to block him from doing what he does best - I dread to think of him up against the Italians or the like in a Competitive match - it would be grim & red card for him

this isnt to say hes a rubbish player - his manu performances are another matter entirely and I am not talking about those

thanks fuck tho - as a non England fan - that beckham should no longer show his face in the squad- this cant be a bad thing for them

well it's not hard when he's left isolated, the facts are that whilst Rooney might start off leading the line but in reality he plays as part of a wave of attackers, so he can drop back and play others into the game as well.

I am going to send Capello a letter with the following words on it...

"Rooney cannot play well as a lone striker!"

Hopefully he'll read it! :)

well he can and he can't, he can when he's not isolated and has two pacey attacking wingers running around him and support from midfield, he can't when he is literally a lone forward.

I think he's had a good season. He lays on the goals, beats his man and manages to score a few as well, which is exactly what you want from a winger.

This is just the kind of tired old cliche that dogs British football. If that's all you want from a winger and you're not prepared to go further than a one line analysis of his play, then you should expect to get obvious, direct, simple players without any of the intelligence, guile or patience that is patently required at the highest level; and that's before we even get on to technique.

I agree with this and I hope Coras has noted that Fabio ditched Jenas and Lennon immediately after I stuck my neck on the line on the Spurs thread and said they weren't up to it imho.
It's also why I said I'd be worried if I was him but not so much Ramos because he can buy from abroad.
Having said that he may well think he ought to try out Lennon again and work with him non stop during the limited time he has with him.
I haven't seen enough of Bentley on MOTD or Youtube to know if he's worth persevering with and although it might seem like I have inside knowledge I haven't even met Fabio apart from in a dream where he offered to share with me his split coconut shell that had a boiled egg and some salad inside ??
No thanks Fabs I said.
