Well we only managed to beat Ukraine by the one - late - goal :hmm: ;)

Ok, so they weren't as good as they have been, but I'd still say they're by no means a walk-over.

Shame on the six people who voted for,"Easy England Win",option during and after the match.
Only eight people selected that option prior to kick off. :hmm:

So, looking ahead to the next two qualifiers, Capello has said he "will give others a chance and have a look at things": who would you like to be given a chance and what things would you like to look at (leave it... :hmm: )?

Or, should we feck tinkering and make sure the team gets as much experience playing together in what is likely to be the starting lineup in South Africa?

Oh, date for your diaries (although it was already in mine when Tyldsley said this last night  :p): Friday, 4th December - the draw for the World Cup group stages

I reckon Capello should focus on building a relatively consistent side. Then again you need more than 11 players to win the world cup so it'd be good to give players like Young, Richards, Lescott and (whisper it) Michael Owen a chance while we've got games in hand.

Well, there we go. The majority view was right. England scraped a narrow 5-1 win.

Oh well. Just goes to show how little we know.

The Brazil friendly will be interesting. They looked awesome last night against Chile, and that was without Kaka, Lucio, and Robinho.

As anyone who watched England under Glenn Hoddle must agree. The team weren't playing badly but it wasn't easy to take a lot of pride in it.

From 90 minute's play and another 90 at the weeken, Argentina are currently absolutely awful and may well not make it to SA. Messi and Aguedo are kind of playing OK as individuals but not really linking up with the rest of the team. Mascherano is playing like a hacker, Riquelme and Cambiasso aren't even being picked for the squad. It's a complete mess.

    Which is nice.

Nobody cares about a friendly, World Cup qualification is all that matters.

Looks like you backed the wrong horse. Unlucky.

Not quite 8-0, but could have been. I'm like fucking Nostradamus me.

On their day the current Russian side can beat pretty much anybody. The thing is it isn't their day often enough for them to be real contenders. Far too inconsistent. However they put it together for a complete tournament in the Euros, so they may be able to put in a real challenge in SA.

They have to qualify first though.

Not possible. He's booked for the Beitar Stadium in Jerusalem. We just get Cliff Richard.

A mate of mine has a box at Stamford Bridge. I rather shocked him when I turned down free tickets for Chelsea against Everton in order to watch Scunny play at Gillingham. In retrospect it remains the wise choice.

The sandwiches in the boxes at Chelsea are crap. The coffee is OK though.

To be fair, we've got Ferdinand, Walcott, Hargreaves and Joe Cole all out at the mo, and that solves at least 3 of your issues if they come back in good form.

Not to mention I think it's fairly clear that Lampard and Gerrard can play together, but I can see Lampard potentially being dropped from the starting 11 in favour of a Cole - Gerrard - Hargreaves (or Barry / Carrick) - Lennon (or Walcott) midfield.

Lampard/gerrard works fine under capello because of how he uses them in his system. Lampard 2, gerrard 2, last night, remember.(ya one was a penalty for lampard, but still...)

I'm really looking forward to seeing Hargreaves back, possibly at the expense of Lampard. On Pro Evo (which, I think you'll agree, is a phenomenally accurate gauge of such matters) I often play a 4-5-1, with Hargreaves as holding, Gerrard and Lampard/Barry in the centre, and then Joe Cole and Rooney playing behind the striker.

Can cause some merry fucking havoc, I can tell ye

Can also be hugely ineffective :(

You should play gerrard on the left like capello does, duh!;) I haven't played pro evo in ages, never really liked the set up of it all but the gameplay was good.

Big results for both my teams last night. The country I'm a citizen of have qualified, and the land of my birth made it into a play off to qualify. Now all I need is Bahrain to beat New Zealand and it's perfect.

I wonder what the odds are on an England versus Bahrain final? Not that I'd be stupid enough to bet on it.

He may sometimes find his way out there, depending on what substitutions I've made and if I have to rejig the formation... :hmm:

What rubbish. Portugal, Poland, Greece, Holland, Spain and arguably France had easier groups to qualify from. No one had beaten Croatia there in a competitive game ever.

Greece had the easiest group and still have maanged to qualify.

Think hargreaves is out of the picture now....

    Def not first choice anymore.

I have been thinking the same, which is a real shame as it took him so long to get into his right position and get the recognition, only for an injury to put him back on the fringes again :(
