England v Ukraine

Not a very good performance, but the Ukraine have some quality players so we have to be pleased at grinding out a win. Kazakhstan and Andorra up next, so we can be confident of making it seven out of seven, by which time we will hopefully be out of sight.

Well done to the Scots and N'Iron, both of whom have a real chance to qualify. Good result for the Republic as well, though I imagine being a man up for 84 minutes must have helped.

5 out of 5 can't complain about that at all :)

Usually england find at least one game to make a hash of, can't remember the last time england truly qualified comfortably, it always seems to come down to the last game or something. The way it's going the last two might not even matter.

I enjoyed the game but why is ITV commentary so shit .

A classic from last night was

"he looks a bit Anemic with his long hair , his dimples and his face"

WTF does that mean .

It's nice to have a functioning left side, though I worry how Gerrard's right-sided pref will stand up to better opposition.

David James . . . God help us . . .

Yeah we still don't really have that extra something special that could god forbid win us something.

But at least we look to be qualifying with the minimum of fuss this time, and should get to about the quarters. That's about the level England generally should be at...

Atmosphere in the stadium was really quiet.

£48 for a ticket and you can't even have or buy a beer in the stadium and have to pay £6 for a Hot Dog and drink!!

Can you a beer inside the stadium, ie out of sight of the pitch as in other big club grounds?

I thought England went totally flat once Lennon went off. He has the pace to get behind defences and at least one of his deliveries was good - one that Rooney got on the end of.

Did Beckham get behind the Ukraine defence at all? He plays essentially as a free kick specialist nowadays. Maybe England should play Rory Delap too for the throw-ins.

Delap's Irish. So that'd make that a bit tricky.

Becks didnt behind the defence, no. But effectively assisted for the winning goal so, yeh job done.

Sure he's not got an English grandmother?:)

England were winning by one goal when Beckham came on and were in the same position at the whistle.

Different style of players though aren't they , I do think we need more pace than Beckham has and as much as I hate to say it Beckham still has enough quality to be picked for an England squad .

Fine. But replacing a man who does with Beckham led to England going horribly flat. Pull off Lampard instead.

Lennon is fast. That's it. Altho that pace does draw defenders from the strikers you also have to be able to cross to be a quality winger. Beckham's crossing is more valuable than Lennon's pace at the mo..

Anyway, I think Capello's working it perfectly. He seems to have tamed the Becks' ego to deal with the fact he's now a super-sub.

Lennon seemed to be out of the game entirely to me... just running along the byline and not getting the ball very often.

No one seemed to want the ball till Beckham came on.

Lennon did fade in the second half. Lampard seemed to fade in about the second minute.

The best moves seemed to centre on Rooney and Gerrard.

Correct me if i'm wrong but didn't Beckham cross the freekick that set up the goal?(i'm not saying he should be man of the match or anything, just I think putting him on was the right thing to do,overall)

Nope. Not in the stadium at all.

You can buy beer in Wembley stadium; they are just not able to sell it during the World Cup qualifiers. I think that FIFA/UEFA don't allow alcohol to be sold in any stadium hosting one of their competitions. This includes World Cup qualifiers, Champions League, UEFA Cup etc.

The full back pushed up on him. It would have been Rooney's job as second srtiker to try and pull the full back infield but he preferred to work with Gerrard on the left instead.

Lennon suffered because of the Rooney/Gerrard love fest - but, of course, Rooney's great hero is Beckham so when he came on . . .
