England v Portugal

The best way to make money off the bookies is historically, to back against England ....because those are where the best odds are.

In major tournament knockout games against any of the big sides (i.e. previous WC winners plus Netherlands, Portugal and Spain) I'd have to agree, as since 1966 we've only won one of these, and that was dubious (the spain game in euro 96 where they had 2 goals disallowed).

I think this misses the point. The question re: the bookies is not whether England are more likely to win or lose, but whether the odds offered by the bookies are out of step with reality. Which they generally are, because the market overestimates England's chances.

But England don't actually lose a vast number of games. In most qualifying games, for instance, you're fairly safe betting on England (even though we tend to make heavy work of them), as are you in games against mediocre teams. And even the odd shock win against a top side in a situation other than a knockout one. But when it comes to the crunch, I think where zed is right, when England are playing any 'big side' in a knockout round, the smart money is without a doubt on their opposition.

Ridiculous that Figo hasn't been retrospectively banned.

The one decent headbutt amongst a thousand dives, and FIFA haven't the balls to do anything as the ref gave a yellow for an incident he had his back to at the time.

Hmmm, I don't actually think it was acted upon by the ref mate.

nothing to do with balls. if you knew anything about football then you'd know that he can't be punished twice. he got a yellow and thats the end of it. the ref booked him and has obviousley mentioned it in his notes, if thats so then he can't be punished again.

England do have a great chance of beating Portugal as long as SGE doesn't try to defend a 1-0 lead. Regardless of how far we go in this tournament, i can't wait to see the back of SGE.

Shouldn't Figo have got a straight red for his headbutt?

Walcott? To come on as a sub against Portugal?

Only way I see that happening is if we're 4 - 0 up, or 4 - 0 down with 15 minutes to go.

So, more than a reasonable chance then...

Here in Porto the locals have no doubt that Portugal will win, because, they say, England is not much good this year!

Portugal do have a great team, and England have not been playing 100% so far. But Spain and Ghana played very well this year... and they've been knocked out.

Fuck - FIFA blocked Korean access to their website to stop the Koreans complaining!!!! Let's hope he doesn't do anything rash against England!

to be fair, he was spot on with allowing Frei's goal to stand

the Koreans were annoyed because Lino was flagging for offside, but the ref saw the defender play him on and let the goal stand.

Think of it like Milton Nielsen and Meier disallowing goals for clear fouls by Shearer and Terry, and the English reaction to both.

EDIT: *:mad::mad::mad: at the memories of heartbreak*
