England V Northern Ireland

Never mind the score - What was the song that played out MOTD? It was a reggae-ish song and the singer sounded a little bit like Maxi Priest.
Cheers.

Dear god that was bad :(

Rooney should have been taken off about 3 minutes before the end of the first half. He lost his rag and kept shunning his captain, he needs to learn to cool himself and gain some respect. The boy plays great but his attitude sucks and his long term use is doubtful due to his chubby nature...

And yes, SWP was the best player, so lets sub the bugger!!!

This is the first time i've thought Sven needs to go. He does.

Staggering beyond belief. At one point our midfield was Gerrard, Lampard , Beckham and Cole which is 3 central midfielders plus another one playing there. Utterly confusing when SWP had been about the only player to aquit himself. And do Gerrard and Lampard have identicle twins who're shit at football because they're not the same as they are at club level that's for sure. And Beckham? Play as many long high balls as you want but when your 3 attackers are all 5'9" or shorter then it's all a waste, and he will get killed by someone like Ballack. Plus Hargreaves was abysmal when he came on with Carrick for some reason not even on the bench.

The goal was brilliant but he was helped a lot by some defenders just standing there with their arms in the air. Why do they do that? Defend the pass and if it's offside the linesman will signal so. It was well onside though.

I think some of these big time charlies need to be dropped - just because they are at a big club does'nt mean that they can walk into the England squad (cough cough David Beckham).

Sven's tactical choices are once again baffling - packing the midfield in a game which we should have been looking to play three up front. For a team with such talent at club level, the attacking force of Frank Lampard (who has never really performed at international level), David Beckham (not in on merit), Michael Owen (who looked impotent) and Wayne Rooney (who was within an inch of being sent off) best summed up England's abysmal performance - lacking in character, devoid of ideas, complacent and petulent.

Im glad Aaron Hughes and Steven Davis had good games though....

I really think people are seeing what they want to see with Beckham. Most consistant performer in the team. That performance against Greece must have been something because every performance since seems to be judged against it.

First off: congratulations to Northern Ireland. deserved winners.

And now to England - what do we have such high expectations of our 'team'? Is is any wonder that everybody loves it so much when we crash and burn? We think that we own the game, when in fact we have been fielding overpaid, overblown pricks for 30+ years.

Don't knock Sven too much - his biggest mistake is trying to introduce tactics to players who don't have an 'O' level between them. But hey, let's just assassinate his character, win or lose. We can't have a foreigner managing our boys, can we?

The players? Thick as shit and twice as useless. Piss on the bar and burn £20 notes when planes are crashing into the Twin Towers, yes. Play intelligent football and have some pride? No way.

Roll on the cricket. Some pride, passion and results.

I miss loads of games -- it's actually a fair point, Oxford have lost quote a few more since March ...:(

Wish I'd not seen the bad loss I did see though.

That includes tonight :(

Exactly, no player not even Rooney or Robinson should assume they'll play in the next game. They have to prove they're worthy. When Geoff Hurst went back into the changing room in 1966 he said "Bring on the next game". Immediately Alf Ramsey said quite sternly "If I select you". That needs to be the thinking because Ferdinand, Cole, Beckham, Lampard and Gerrard are not putting their all in because they know their place in assured.

I honestly thought we'd probably scratch a win tonight, despite looking worse than shite for the entire encounter.

Credit where it's due, NI played brilliantly, it wasn't even backs to the wall - it was just good, disciplined football and we didn't have the quality to stretch them.

They pointed out on MotD that SGE doesn't really coach and he's not much of a motivator, evidence is that he's routinely out-thought tactically by all and sundry (and no disrespect to Lawrie Sanchez, but he's no Arsene Wenger). So what exactly is he for? Picking the team? Most pub-pundits can do that. He's got to go ASAP (and should have gone after the euros), because we're just wasting the best generation of English players we've had in god knows how long.

Who would you suggest replaces him?! There is no english manager out there, and it's unbeliavable people are suggesting getting rid of him. It's the first qualifier we've lost under his management, and when we qualify (through winning the group, which I believe we will still do) then it will be seen as a mere blip on the record.

For all those who are taking so much satisfaction from our defeat:

Will Wales (no competitve win from the last 14 games!) be there? NO
Will Scotland? Very Unlikely
Will Northern Ireland? No
Will the Republic? Doubtful.

Just as an usual result for Wales against Italy doesnt make Wales a World Class team, neither a defeat against a determined N.I. team make England a bad team.

International footbal is getting alot more competitive, and for the better, there are very fewteams you can turn over easily. Little teams are now getting results against the big teams, even Liectenstein FFS.

Not the same fella who was joint top scorer in the Euro 2003?

Fair enough, and I was a supporter of Sven previously. What bothered me yesterday was the total lack of confidence the team had. If we'd played really well but they'd got a jammy win, I wouldn't have minded. It's the fact that we looked so nervous even against a small team like NI that was fucked up. IMO.

I'm not at all convinced we will beat AUstria and poland in the last two games now, even with the crowd behind us.

I think we will beat Poland and Austria myself, but I am glad we have Austria first. N.I. were smart to make the pitch as small as possible, it stopped us passing the ball. The defence was to lax and I will be glad when Terry and Neville are back.

But once again well done N.I. they made the most of what they had.

We can beat them. It's going to be tough though. Everything would have seemed so much better if we'd scraped a win last night. Then the poland result would have been irrelevant.

It's not just the result, it's his tactical ineptness and his inability to get even competent performances out of a extremely talented players. The last 3 games have been a disgrace. I'd prefer Stuart Pearce as it happens.

And? None of the top international teams are full of salt of earth graduates on a fiver an hour, they're all overpaid pricks. Our pricks are currently much better than they've been for any time in the last 20 years and we should be converting that into not just easy wins over countries like Northern Ireland but results in major competitions.
David Beckham (not in on merit)
I reckon him and Paul Robinson were our 'best' players today.
The boy plays great but his attitude sucks and his long term use is doubtful due to his chubby nature...
What's a chubby nature? How does it affect his long term use? Despite behaving like a twat in the first half he's of definite use at the moment. Being a bit of a porker isn't going to make his quality decline.

Sorry , my mistake , he was Englands second highest scorer at Euro 2004 with three and made the best XI of the competition. So much for not producing anything at an international level.

Why the fuck has Rooney been put on the left  If Sven is so keen on 4-5-1 then he needs to pick players that can play in the positions he needs , it's almost like he feels he can't leave Rooney out because of the fuss that will be made about it !

More importantly, why is Owen up front on his own...

Which just means that Northern Ireland are better than Wales

You must be very proud... :)

Seriously though, NI won because they were good and England were crap.

Simple.

I'm just not able to get as mad as some other sensitive posters* over the game.

*Yeah, that's right - fucking you belushi!
