Yep. It was like watching Tottenham. :p
You're not that far wrong,we play shit against poor opposition, but ok against a decent side. Looks at last seasons results for proof of this.

Whereas I think the Netherlands are like the international west ham: always praised for having a great passing game, produce stacks of great players, yet when it comes down to it, really don't have that fantastic a record and always blow it royally when they get a good chance at something.

there's an idea for a thread here. "what international team do your club most resemble" :D

Stewart Downing is not good enough to play international football. But he's Steve McLaren's boyo and he'll be here to stay.

And although I supported the decision to drop Beckham I reckon his former England teammates disagree and used this match to demonstrate.

Well done Scotland btw. :)

I reckon that's not true.

Rooney hasn't scored in a competitive international for two years. Don't think he'll start again now either

AJ's injured.

rooney had a couple of moments but a bad game overall. he's obviously completely out of form, then again defoe is as well isn't he? so.. what? darren bent?

Obviously I meant in general rather than right now. He's a sacred cow who doesn't justify his place, if he can't score for England when it matters what is the point of him being there?

blimey. he's only played in about ten competitive games in the past two years. he's had two broken feet and been played when blatantly unfit. he's 20 years old.

he's also scored twice for england in the past ten games, admittedly in friendlies.

give him a break eh?

wait a minute... you wouldn't be an everton fan would you? :D

I didn't see the game but saw the highlights. Some are saying on 606 its the same old england, and maybe it is. I liked the way steve McClaren didn't hide in the interview after the game, and criticised the performance. Another caller also pointed out that England didn't do the basic well. Anyone else agree with this summary.

i didn't see it but did either lampard or gerrard do anythig to justify their selection.

i ahve jsut watched spain lose to sweden, england are in a much better position than them.

Another two hours of my life wasted watching that shower of shite trying to play the beautiful game.

I think we are in for a big shock on wednesday - Croatians are on a high after spanking Andorra 7-0.

Mc Claren out - let El Tel run the show again.

Of course it's now I more furthently remember my partial Scottish herotidge.

Wednesday will be a better game. Although I'm not sure we'll win.
:(

Indeed. Rooney is obviously out of form at the moment so there is a case for dropping him at the moment until he gets it back together. That doesn't change the fact that he's in a completely different league to someone like Johnson.

Whatever. I'm only basing my opinion on results. He doesn't score much in the Champions League either.

I'd advocate playing him when England play Charlton or Portsmouth though :p

Johnson has a lot of Champions League goals does he?:p

Hard luck lads, sometimes when you're up agianst real quality sides you just can't bring your best game. Us Scots had quite a tricky fixture last night too. Opposition was a bit closer to our level of course, so that probably helped.
Still, thems the breaks.

Why Wright-Phillips didn't start I'll never understand.
For that matter, why did you keep slinging wide balls into the box, when the Macedonians are all huge and gave Crouch no space at all. Lampard, Gerrard and Wright-Phillips were getting more action on the inside but still the sloppy crosses just kept coming. Credit to Macedonia for keping men up and not getting swamped.

Still, you'll win the group so it hardly matters.

Probably McLaren didn't think he had the whole match in him. He hasn't exactly played a lot of games recently.

ETA: Or more realistically he just refuses to drop Lampard, even though he's been shit recently.

He's not failed miserably to score in the competition for two years either :p

There's quite a few England players that need a reality check and who should recieve it by being dropped.

Top of my list would be Ferdinand, Lampard, Cole and Downing.

The first 3 are all just fat lazy cunts who believe their own bullshit. Downing looks like a Nationwide League player and should never darken an England dressing room again.

The team needs some youthful vigour from some players who want to prove themselves. At this level it is really mostly about attitude and temperament. Players should be picked as much for this as their footballing ability in my opinion.

Lampard, Ferdinand and Cole should all be dropped and made to prove their hunger all over again.

They should also try and talk Paul Scholes out of retirement too.

Did feel a bit like the world cup, all over again. They largely lost because 4 or 5 players were abysmal, couldn't pass, couldn't shoot - and one, Downing, shouldn't have been there at all. However, a la Sven, what was more worrying was the failure to make tactical changes when the original approach failed.

[someone had to say this: Was probably right to drop Beckham after the world cup. However this was exactly the kind of game where he could have made a difference - shit all round performance, but the odd perfect cross or free kick that made it into a 1-0. Seems like they've now got two choices on the right - Lennon and Wright Phillips - who can do the thing Beckham can't (run past people), but can't do the thing he can (cross)]
