one thing is even clearer today than before. we are NOt gonna win the world cup. we haven't a prayer.

Call me deluded, but I think we have as good a chance as anyone other than Brazil. Nobody other than them is playing all that outstandingly.

Gforce - how did the win flatter England? Hungary barely had any chances. Seemed a pretty fair reflection to me.

We always bottle it though, I see no reason why we shouldn't this time either. I sincerely hope I'm wrong obviously.

Yes, but so do half the other teams... Argentina, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, have all shown bottling tendencies in recent years!

As long as we avoid penalties we don't necessarily need to bottle it any more than anyone else...

We have got a paryer, one so-so performance that was still won comfortably in a friendly is not reason to despair!

It really annoys me this doom and gloom, should we write off Brazil because they only managed to scrape a 1-0 win against China (who are worse than Hungary) not so long ago? SHould we write off Argetina because Ecudaor beat them 2-0 in qualifying less than a year ago?

OF course ENgland aren't going to get far in the World Cup if they put in perfomaces like they did in the first 40 mins, but do you really expect them to play the same in a friendly against Hungary as thye would in say a WC semi-final against Brazil?

As for bottling it, in just about every single World Cup we've been in we've had a fair chance of winning it, but (since 1966) we've never had that bit of luck that we've needed and we can't complain too much as most of the time there's been better teams.

Of course we probably won't win it this year, but we've got as good chance as anyone except probably Brazil.

i agree.

A lot of anti-English posters say that one reason they dislike England is the constant overrating/overhyping of the team, but IMO England fans are the opposite - utterly negative about our team, when really we're a good team which usually has a decent chance. Sure, we don't win, but then when have Spain won? When have the Netherlands won (other than Euro 88) with all their quality? And Italy - nothing since 82... And so on...

True, other teams bottle it too. So if all the teams who usually bottle it, bottle it again, then they won't win it, we won't win it and Brazil will win it.

Still at least Sven's not fannying around trying out different formations. Oh sorry.

What the feck is he doing? Does he not know this team so well that he has to play another set-up a couple of weeks before the game?

What a nonce.

Did Brazil bottle in 1998? Many claim they did.

To win the World Cup first of all you need talent - the team with the most talent is neraly always the most liekly to win unless hoplessly mismanaged or unbalanced (and before anyoen says anything whilst England could be a little more balanced and Sven's yet to show he's a genius at inetrnational managment, England are still neither of these), but you also need a little bit of luck.

Since 1966, England's record is:

1970: went out to Germany AET after being 2-0 up, also gave evntual winners Brazil their toughest game.

1982: went out undefeated in 2nd round with a record W3 D2 L0 (including a good win against Platini's France who in fairness should of been in the final and a draw aginst Germany who were the team that robbed France in the smei-final)

1986: Went out 2-1 to eventual winners Argentina in the QF led by Maradona to an illegal goal and a fntastic goal

1990: wnt out in semi-fnal on penalties to eventual winners Germnay

1998: went out to Argentina on penalites in QF afte having a perfectly good golden goal disallowed.

2002: Went out 2-1 in QF to evntual winners Brazil, in what was probably the toughest match Brazil faced in the whole tournament.

We've just not had the luck, it may sound like an excuse, but it isn't because I'm not saying we necessarily deserved the luck.

As for bottle, I would of liked to of seen more self-belief against brazil in 2002, but whilst I'm not of the school of thought that says it's a waste of time to pactice penalites, winning a penalty shoot-out is more luck than anyhting else.

I completely agree with the above. In all the stated examples we've really been close to actually doing something, but things haven't quite gone for us.

it's the Euros where, for the most part (except 2004 and 1996) we've been shite...

As a Scot living in England I can remember in the eighties I couldn't stand England fans (or the team for that matter) because they were always so full of the usual bullshit. It's strange to think that the better the team has got, and for me it's the best England team in living memory, or at least should be. Accepting the fact that defeat is inevitable is the first step to true zen as a football fan, as anything other than defeat is a Brucey bonus and its nice to see some of you England fans showing some of that.

I really wouldn't mind England doing well this year & have nothing like the dislike I used to have. Im still supporting T&T mind and still wearing my Argentina top but the thought of Peter Crouch becoming the new Geoff Hurst wouldn't be a bad thing at all :)

true - but, in addition to our perennial failing of playing below individual capacity, we have lost (arguably) our best player, our manager is a ditherer and panicker, our main marksman is out of form and practice, ans we STILL haven't solved the problem of the midfield ballwinner. Plus, ain't much point in taking the two best midfielders in europe to the ball if BOTH of them play identical roles. and if Owen takes a knock we are totally, utterly sunk.
