Sad news I saw him as the utility player who could play in a number of roles/positions ...depending on the opposition

Carn't think of anyone else who can play back4 or midfield (not rio for sure)

hes only out a month now so could be named still. its only a metatarsol not anything big. Still there would be major doubts about his fitness and seeing as he is a abck up player is it really worth the risk, especilly in a position that we are so strong in(centre back).

I think Carrick would combine superbly with Rooney's runs from deep as he has the ability to not crowd the more attacking players around him*. And if those two are the effective play-makers you would think a bit of speed down one or both of the flanks would be advantageous. But who? SWP? Pennant? Lennon?

*If Wayne ever fancies a free transfer to North London to try this out he'd be more than welcome. ;)

I agree, Lennon and even Downing seem to be making a late run for

inclusion.

While SWP, due in part to a lack of games for Chelsea may even not go at

all.

Judging from the 2002 squad, Erikson should take:

3 goalkeepers
8 defenders
7 midfielders
and
5 forwards

I would suggest that Rooney might be one of those, but Erikson has been

seen watching Walcott recently, so maybe him??

Many of the columnists are not naming Carrick, which seems a shame...

Should King go with his metatarsal injury?

Article in today's Guardian about Eriksson's late interest in Walcott, but I can't see it happening. He might take him along as an non-playing member for the experience.

Walcott is in, and he will play necessary, there's no room for non-players. He's nippy and skillful, and no opponent will have a clue. Good move.

the 8th Midfielder? They should take a chance and pick someone like Gary O'neil.

Gario isn't good enough at the minute, give him a year or so.

I like the idea of Walcott, unknown player in Europe or even in this league. Lots of skill, pace, strength and good on the ball. It's nice to see Sven gamble - Lennon, Downing and Walcott will make this an interesting WC for England.

Obviously DVDs of Jersey Joe playing for Saints will be flying out (or flying through cyberspace whatever) to Paraguay, Sweden and T&T so they will have seen something of him by the time the games arrive. Still, I'm feeling positive about the squad.

A bit of fantasy (or desperation) from Eriksson. I like Hargreaves, his versatility could be useful, and a good holding midfielder if Carrick isn't doing it. He's good for a place. Not sure about Jenas though, and the strikers are looking thin. There's a bit too much focus on Crouch starting for my liking. Plan B should remain just that.

Whatever, bring it on, can't wait.

I have to admit to being somewhat concerned as to the lack of strikers in the squad. HOW did Andrew Johnson, who has not even topped the English strikers in the 'Championship' (that was Cameron Jerome), get in before the top English scorer in the premiership, Darren Bent. If we are short in this area we should just take the Englishman with the most from the Prem that season surely!!

Now we have 2 injured, an untried teenager and Crouch.

I knew Owen shouldn't have left Real, he was doing fine there and not even playing all that much - idiot!!

Don't worry everyone, I had a dream last night in which England played in the world cup final and won with some breathless, exciting football, Walcott weaving through the defences like nothing we've seen before.

England team to face Belarus: James (Man City), Hargreaves (Bayern Munich), A Cole (Arsenal), Carrick (Tottenham), Carragher (Liverpool), Campbell (Arsenal), Lennon (Tottenham), Jenas (Tottenham), Crouch (Liverpool), Owen (Newcastle), Downing (Middlesbrough).

Substitutes: Bridge (Chelsea), Green (Norwich), P Neville (Everton), Dawson (Tottenham), J Cole (Chelsea), Defoe (Tottenham), Johnson (Crystal Palace), Walcott (Arsenal), Carson (Liverpool).

Should be good, Walcott to come on for a spell in the second half, Lennon, Jenas and Downing in the midfield with Carrick holding. :)
