England Fans.... GSTQ and Rule Brittania

William of Walworth said:
Read my posts please in which I specifically say I neither want not expect Scots to support England.

I was criticising the kneejerk negativity and the bigotry of these ABE, any stick to beat England with reactions, devoid of any proper analysis or assessment.

There's a difference, if you think about it.

Who would you prefer to win the World Cup - Germany or Brazil? USA or Canada?

Personally I do not give a damn if anyone non-English supports England or not. I found it hard myself to support them after that dirge served up last night.

Its just Chorlton getting on his favourite hobby horse again & riding it for all its worth.. I would rather we had Jerusalem as an English anthem. After all the Welsh have land of my fathers (or Fu*king great fishes are whales, they swim in the sea, we eat them for tea..:p ), the scots have a very nationlistic anthem in Flower of Scotland, written in the 1920's btw & the Irish rugby team have Soldiers of Ireland.

You're coming across in this thread as a shitstirring bigot.

really? i apologise, i genuinely don't intend to... i just wanted to ask a question about how england fans can justify this - so far we have one admissio, by andy that he loved the empire - which is the best answer on this thread

what was your favourite genocide? kenya? india? hang on i got it... the first use of chemical warfare by the british on the kurds?

RULE bRITTANIA

Nah for being total English bastards you cannot beat the highland clearances of the second half of the eighteenth century..:p

Ireland's Call, not 'Soldiers of Ireland'. You may be referring to Amhrann na Fiann or 'Soldier's Song' which is only played at Lansdowne.

the welsh and scots have the same fucking anthem that the english thrust upon them - as do the occupied 6 counties in the north of ireland - only those 6 counties choose to sing it - the other countries, thank christ, don't play along with the rules imposed and sing their own.

ahhh... rarely has divide and conquer been empoyed so well - same tactics being used by 'our boys' in basra i note

what do you think when you hear those being sung by england fans?

cause i gotta say, any attempt to think "oh, y'know i know the players, their alright, maybe nice to see them get a result" quickly when i hear the strains of

Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves:
Britons never will be slaves.

absolute.fucking.dirge

and whats the craic with the sycophantic warblings to that cunt of a queen? are you all 90 minute royalists now?

i know that many of you on here have politics that could be explained as left of centre - so how do you qualify that shit?

It's the British national anthem. Scotland used it in 74 and 78 (when England "couldnae dee it cuz they didnae qualify"). It's no more England's anthem than Scotland's. I hate it when they use that grovelling paean to monarchy and look forward to when "Jerusalem" is elevated to its rightful position in its stead.

Ditto what you say about "Rule Britannia".

The Germans changed the words of their anthem so as not to be offensive ( Germany over all ). So the English could change if they wanted to.

Surely there's an alternative republican anthem you could sing.

I grant you GTSQ etc would still be sung...... but step by step.

Personally I couldn't sing anything I didn't agree with the lyrics to.

there is a good bit in 'the england factor' where someone talks about the marseillaise being a revolutionary song about an imigrant town - for england to follow suit London Calling would be a good shout...

um all teams sing their national anthem before world cup games, I don't get the issue?

gstq is a fucking dirge - admittedly many anthems are but the underlying sentiment of glorifying the monarch is a particularly hideous one... but not only is it sung before the game, the fans sing it also during the game, with great gusto - as if they are proud to be subserviant to this hideous beast who rules over them - that is bad enough but when they start singing their songs of empire like rule britannia i find it hard to do anything but despise the filthy imperialistic war-mongering cunts

but thats just me - the majority of you lot seem to be able to ignore it and turn a blind eye to it - must be an english thing i guess

Ours is shite monarchist twaddle, most (if not all) others are about fields, valleys and shit, rather than some Royal idiots.

They sing it to get the lads going, nothing more. If Jerusalem or summat else was the anthem they'd sing that. It really is that simple.

Jerusalem is more stirring a song, but the key point it's about inclusion and building a better England than cowtowing and affirming you s support for the monarchy.

Can't you have a song that non-monarchists would feel happy singing.

tbh i would take this thread more seriously if it hadn't been posted directly after England had won their second match of two in the world cup, thereby disproving all those who predicted their failure, and who now have to search for something else to dig at!

Many national anthems date from a time when to be patriotic was to want to invade thy neighbouring country and nick its resources.

Many are essentially marches, in a European style, 'cos that's where they originated. Therefore most are militaristic, chest-puffing dirges.

Even when the music is fairly stirring - le Marseillaise - you know the lyrics? "Arise children of our fatherland?" Shiiiiit.

Trouble with the OP is it's asking people sat at their computers why people at a game in Germany sing GSTQ and RB. How the fuck does anyone on here know?

17:33 yesterday - midway through the second half with the game still at 0-0 - just as the crusader-wear brigade started to announce to the world that they loved their monarch for the umpteenth time

makes mr physically sick, how can the 'home nations' be expected to support engerlund with this bilge spewing forth

shame on you

there are posters over there - i'll ask them when they get back - but short of running over there and asking myself i thought i would ask some of the england fans on here...

i'm sorry if this questioning has caused embarrased shuffling and shoe staring - i will try to ask questions along the lines of "england: why are they so DAMN GOOD?" in future

They do try, I've heard rumblings of Jerusalem at games (on the telly) but it doesn't get going, maybe the daft cunts don't know the words.

<sighs>

you stated that this post was posted directly after the england game

i pointed out that it was posted during the england game (first half not second as i originally stated right enough)

you are now showing the world your inability to follow a thread right now LIVE on an interweb

any further questions please send them in a pm to LostProphet - he is the man to guide you through this trickyness

One cannot expect republicans to support a team with a monarchist themed anthem, seems fair enough. I don't sing it meself, if it was up to me I'd get rid of them all together and have a "Football Anthem" for everyone.
