So who joins in for a rousing chorus of 'God Save the Queen', or 'Rule Britannia' when the England boys are on the pitch?

And if you don't sing along, why not?

because I support the team - and my fellow workers - not the State, or the desiccated old trout nominally at its' apex.
and cos I'm with Oscar W on the subject of patriotism.

Could also apply to supporters of a certain club team as well.
  8. revol68

    revol68 what, fucking what?

Which club team has supporters who sing reactionary jingoistic shit in support of English/British nationalism, other than Rangers, Linfield and sections of Chelsea?

Yes, I go to plenty of England games and sing them. Jerusalem gets sung outside of stadiums but never in them. As you'll expect England FC don't have many songs.

WBA certainly sang GSTQ when they came to CCS.

When I used to go to England games I used to do so whole heartedly along with some along songs as well.

Dont go anymore cos its all a bit daft but if you go along with watch your national side then I guess it figures you sing national songs.

Thing is, neither Rule Britannia or God Save the Queen are English songs. The clue for the former is in the title, and anyone with a grasp of history will know that the Welsh are the original Britons.

You're more than welcome to have the bloody songs back if you want. Translate them into Flemish, L√ętzebuergesch or whatever language it is they speak in Wales. :p

not that I've noticed in the last 20 years, and the Yorkshire Republican Army song doesn't sound much like reactionary jingoistic shit in support of English/British nationalism to me.

No sane Welsh person would sing such rubbish at a football game.

I'd rather sing something like "3 Lions" or "Land of Hope & Glory"

As an Englishman I won't sing either "God save the Queen" or "Rule bloody Britania" for the obvious reasons.

    Why the "hand grenade" Ed?

im happy enough singing rule britania but don't sing the anthem.

But could you explain how it isn't appropriate for us to sing our national anthem at a football match? The welsh, scots, aussies, canadians etc should just be singing it too!:D

Don't you find it a bit odd for English fans to be signing the British national anthem when they're playing Wales? Technically, they'd be cheering on both teams.

I'm an England fan but I don't sing either at the football.

    1) Rule Britannia is crap, and has more than just a slight air of direct imperialism about it. It also doesn't seem very 'English' as a song anyway.

    2) 'God Save The Queen' is also a crap tune, and is too royalist - plus its the British national anthem so not specifically an English thing, although it seems to become so when we're playling other British teams. Odd.

Most importantly, neither songs are about football. 'World In Motion' or '3 Lions' are, and they are my favourites.

I'm sure that's exactly how you taffs would view it.

Land of Hope and Glory would be my choice. If I was ever King.

The whole of this UK thing is odd.

Personally I think English teams should sing English songs and play each other in English leagues.

Just a shame that the Welsh dont seem to think the same.

I would love to hear most of Wembley doing the John Barnes 'rap' bit.

Yeah it is a bit weird singing it when playing other home nations teams(or colonies) however i suspect it will piss you lot off so why not.

  29. kabbes

I think fans should sing "Three Little Maids Are We".

It should be every England fans duty to know the John Barnes rap!
