England Cricket 2024

Do we not even sing when we're winning now?

Just seen extended highlights. What they appeared to show was NZ bowling short-pitched down leg-side and England backing away to leg to thrash at every ball. I think Carse seemed to play the same swish and miss (hitting the odd one) at every ball he faced. Atkinson looked cultured by comparison.

Pleased for Woakes, he bowled well and with more luck could have 4 or 5 by now. Carse is starting to impress me, he bowls a hard ball as they say.

Can't cock it up from here surely?

NZ need to rethink their selection. Blundell is hopelessly out of form, with bat and gloves. I don't know if they have another keeper waiting in the wings but I'd make Latham keeper and bring Young back.

Problem with that is that Latham is an opener. He would have to drop down the order and Young would have to open. Conway also keeps, but same problem.

I agree that Blundell is out of form. He was the only batter to fail in India.

But yeah, the difference between the two teams so far in this match is clear - NZ didn't hold onto their chances. Six dropped catches, they're currently six down with scores level.

Other difference is the soft dismissals on day 1. Really it was criminal to give Bashir four wickets.

I think it was 8 drops in the end. Phillips dropped 3. Brook was dropped 5 times in what someone described as the worst 170 ever. Which was harsh, because he played some amazing ridiculous shots when he wasn't being dropped. Even Brook looked embarrassed when Phillips dropped him (again) on 147.

In fairness to Blundell, as often happens to the man out of form, he got one of the best balls of the day first up and such a small scratch he reviewed the nick.

Yesterday Kamindu Mendis, who is one of the best players in the world right now, burned SL's final review on one of the more obvious caught behinds. Nobody could believe he'd reviewed it.

Nicely mopped up by Carse. Apart from the inevitable last wicket partnership. Runs knocked off at 8 an over. Bazball alive and well...until the next 2 matches at least.

I've watched those drops again and Brook has a point when he says he sometimes makes his own luck because he hits the ball so hard. He really does. He pointed out that the first one to Phillips "I don't think many people are catching that". He's right. I'd get the fuck out of the way of a cricket ball hit that hard at me from 20 yards away.

Wasn't it Brian Close one time was fielding close and the batter hit the ball straight at him, bounced off his head and went for a four over the opposite boundary. Wimps nowadays wimps

Now 217-4 at drinks. So that's nearly 100 runs in an hour. Brook is playing a ridiculous innings. He's played and missed a few, but anyone would as the ball is seaming both ways. It's not a flukey hundred, this one.

It looks like most of the crowd are Brits. Nice tour to go on.

Watching the Aus/Ind one at the mo and that's jam packed too. Good to see.
45,000 in for that one. Pink ball, Labuscagne trying to survive under lights.

Much smaller crowds in SA for the SL test but another good contest.

There's almost 24-hour test cricket on atm.

Australia have done really well here under lights. Credit to under-fire Labuschagne. The commentators are analysing his every move to death, but he's still there. India are in big trouble already - tomorrow afternoon with a soft ball, batting will be much easier.

It's Bumrah or bust for India. He can't do it on his own.

Saving the highlights for later but I see Brookball is alive and well (and he wasn't dropped once this time apparently).
He still rode his luck with a few swishes and misses, the odd miscue that didn't go to hand. But both he and Pope played well. Brook's sixes were astonishing shots. He must hit the ball harder than anyone else in test cricket.

Credit to Pope - I criticise him a lot but England were in trouble and at the point I went to bed (the ball before Pope got out), NZ looked totally lost for ideas.

Crawley gone.

Henry to Crawley this series: 4-0!

As the commentators were saying, why wasn't Henry bowling the first over. Feels like Southee gets the new ball on seniority rather than merit nowadays.

Bethell looking really good again. He's a very stylish player. I may have to rescind my initial doubts. By England standards, while super-attacking, he's actually very orthodox.

Sadly all the tension is gone already. Fields back, England pushing singles to yhe good balls. Hitting the bad ones gor six.

Only batter error will get a wicket. Game is now gone for NZ. England can set them 600 to win if they like. 800.
