Employment with schizophrenia

is it going to be alright then? hardly any rl friends left. a 2.2 from a redbrick. schizophrenia/anxieties/some depression. wtf is life going to do, put me through emotional pain my whole life... so that tbh, i can hardly get out of bed?

still, mild mania will get me through.

seriously, wtf is reasonabley out there for me?

118118 imho you have to learn to see - the glass is always half full -

if you were an engineer looking at the half full glass you would say the glass is twice as big as it needs be :-)

if you are a pessimist the glass is half empty (not a good way to see)

if you are an optimist it is full of water and air and the air is spilling out everywhere there is so much of it .. :-)) thats the way to look at things

life is not always easy but there are always options, there is always a way forward, a 2.2 is not the end of the world, believe me, you can still write a good CV, you can still get to interviews and you can still win a job that you like, remember in interviews you interview them as much as they interview you, if you think you will not like the job don't take it .. etc etc

its late, I hope you get my drift, always room for a healthy dose of optimism.

anyhow at least you have your health :-)

To come back with something perhaps more constructive ..

Have you any ideas yourself about jobs that you think you might like ?

and

Have you tried those computer programmes that they should have in your Uni careers department that ask you lots of questions and then suggest possibly suitable careers for you ?

I used a program like that many years ago and it was quite useful for me.

:D as a philospher, i suspect that the galss is twice as big as it wants to be.

can you get any help from the careers service at your old uni?

I know at my old uni they would help, even a while after graduation.

fine :)

i don't know what you want, tbh. you've got a 2:2, that's more than i have after i left uni with MH problems. 3 years at uni with no certificate at the end of it is a unbelievable barrier to a decent job.

to be honest mate, a 2:2's not bad at all and you can be justifiably proud of yourself after still managing to achieve this with schizophrenia. What uni were you at, may I ask?

I would also keep quiet about letting employers know about your mental health at least until you actually have the job. It should be OK because people are a lot more tolerant these days, at least people our age are, but there are alot of bosses in companies who would not want anything to do with someone with even the slightest mental health issue, just be careful.

It does make me really angry tbh. I have a good friend who is schizophrenic and she is extremely bright, there is no reason why someone with schizophrenia can't achieve well in life. The problem is that once you are diagnosed with it it can close so many doors for you in terms of jobs etc. But I am sure you will be fine, you don't have to disclose your complete medical records to prospective employers as far as I know.

Good luck mate xx

i think it was forgwoman who siad don't mention the diseqase: yes and no. i don't have a problem with this, but I am 25 and haven't graduate, and only had 6 months ish of work since leaving school. how do I explain those gaps.

apart from the '2' afterthe '2', my cv would still be alright if it weren't for my age.

yeah. i've not changed much on the surface, but my depression ended, and don't have thought alienation. started a very sensible masters, but apathy kicked in and i slowly flunked. currently NOT working, and would like to change that :) that does not mean I can, but sorta expect to in a year or so.
anyway bump, cos how does it happen?

Voluntary work.

tried it a few times, but it never goes anywhere. learning new skills in this mode is possible, but i takes a lot longer for some reason. you can think of it as each day volunteering being at a new place with no priori knowledge of what is going on, it's your worse day at work you can remember, and everyone hates you. great that you turned up anyway ha.

not that i'm giving up, as i still want a masters, in something completely irrelevant this time.

Ah. That explains who you were

It's mostly about having something to put on your cv.

My advice would be don't leave gaps. Even if you attended uni but didn't graduate you can put 'attended Oxbridge University, masters course in Archaeology of Mayan civilisations (did not graduate due to health issue since resolved)' 1999-2001

A gap looks like you're trying to hide something.

In any covering letter you can state that the health issue has long since been resolved/stabilised. I would not mention schizophrenia because people tend to think of it stereotypes due to not understanding it and you would be opening yourself up to bias.

yeah ^. i read yesterday that 25% of ppl diagnosed with schizophrenia have completely recovered and 15% have a job. that's pretty damning of somebody anyway.
