Empire magazines top 500 films

How can you not like The Green Mile?

What's to like - it's such an over earnest piece of nonsense. It's over indulgent, over performed, it's dull and slow, and it has Tom Hanks giving that weary eyed, burdened everyman act yet again.

It's a fucking life sentence!

There are some VERY odd inclusions

451. Speed (Jan De Bont, 1994)

454. The Bourne Supremacy (Paul Greengrass, 2004)
456. 28 Days Later (Danny Boyle, 2002)
457. Full Metal Jacket (Stanley Kubrick, 1987)
465. 12 Monkeys (Terry Gilliam, 1995)
466. Snatch (Guy Ritchie, 2000)
467. The Deer Hunter (Michael Cimino, 1978)
469. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (Terry Gilliam, 1998)
473. Into the Wild (Sean Penn, 2007)
485. The Wicker Man (Robin Hardy, 1973)
486. Breakfast at Tiffany’s (Blake Edwards, 1961)
491. Ben-Hur (William Wyler, 1959)

Lots of people like Speed

I'm also pleased to see Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid - oft overlooked IMO.

V for Vendetta is an odd inclusion.

I would imagine the top 500 to all be great - there is a large chunk of these which fail to meet this requirement - I mean Spiderman 2...great? A good summer smash hit, but not great.

The Godfather is great, The Apartment is great, Get Carter is great, even the Princess Bride has greatness within it, but the Harry Potters/Pirates of the Caribbean are just fun. Perhaps fun is great too...um!?

just don't get me started on the fucker Forrest Gump!

If we were to make it a list of the 10,000 best films ever, we could get almost everything ever made in there, then no one would feel left out.

Yes, there can be great films for kids, like there are great kids' books. 'The Red Balloon', 'Toy Story' or one of the Sinbad films (forgotten which one) are great kids films.

Yep - Red Balloon is great, toy Story too and Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (which my auntie took me to see when I was little) - I don't feel that Spiderman 2 is great - it's just big, expensive, noisy entertainment.
