Empire building in SE24. Herne Hill doomed..

hello; not posted before but for what it's worth (from the HH residents forum website) -

"NEW SIGN AT START OF HALF MOON LANE

Clt Toby Eckersley assures us that the new singing welcoming people to Dulwich outside No 3 Half Moon Lane has been put there against the wishes of the Community Council and hopefully this will go in the near future apparently others have appeared including one at the top of Sunray Avenue."

John

Now that's posh. Welcoming visitors with a choir. :D

Yay, it's the Herne Hill Liberation Front. I don't want to live in Dulwich- if I did, I'd live... well, in Dulwich. Herne Hill needs protecting. Someone needs to tell Southwark Council to move that sign ASAP. My mum came to visit and the poor dear was so confused by it.

I love that sign in Cafe Provencal. I want one!!

I looked last night and I couldn't see the 'welcome to dulwich' sign!! Maybe it has retreated back to where it belongs (ie. Dulwich), yay!!

I have had so many good times in there.

Ought to go more often.

Two pounds a camembert inna designer van bag
...
Out in the streets they call out rah-rah.
Welcome to Dulrock
;)

TeeJay, you can be the official Herne Hill poet! We should all have official titles and then go to cafe prov to plan independance for se24! Or maybe to that mexican place under the railway bridge (what a quality restaurant!!)

I like it in there too. Endearingly amateur - last time the extractor fan in the kitchen had packed up and we were were served our food, shrouded in smoke, by the most forgetful waiter ever - but a friendly, decent neighbourhood restaurant in my book.

I rarely get past the steak option to be honest - there's something right about a hunk of red flesh in that bistro setting and they cook it well. I can't really remember what the rest of the food's like if I'm honest. Probably doesn't help that those little tumblers they use for wine are dangerous - somehow they seem to speed my drinking rate along at a helluva rate.

:)

I know exactly what you mean about the tumblers being dangerous, dangerous things! I was there on a date and managed to knock back 3/4 of the bottle before we'd even got the food without really realising, my date was none too impressed.

I haven't had the steak (I'm vege) but I've eaten mushrooms there- which is a big deal for me as I can't stand them.

My friend used to work in cafe prov, he endearingly described himself as their 'kitchen bitch' - so maybe it was him who caused the billowing smoke and forgetful orders. Still, surely he deserves a round of applause for working at cafe prov, it must be the coolest place in herne hill to work!

They always go on about their 'legendary' garlic chips but I've never found them to be all that remarkable if I'm honest. They're slightly wedge-like chips with a hint of garlic. Or am I missing something?

Dulwich signs - postscript

When I posted the bit about Cllr Toby and the Community Council protesting about the signs what I didn't realise was their concern was not with the 'D' word. They were actually upset by the (admittedly) garish pink colour!

Oh well - the signs are indeed gone now, never to return.

There was an article in the South London Press about those signs. The Herne Hill Society had a protest against them with a Welcome to Herne Hill sign. Can't find a link.

I like Cafe Prov, but their veggie options are a bit limited.

Victory for the Hillites over the Dulwich Conquistadors! And how delightful that the battle was won on purely asthetic grounds.

A utilitarian black-on-white sign & the advance would have been a fait accompli, but that's the trouble with yer expansionist Dulwich mob - always going with Homes & Gardens colour of the month, and not a thought to the consequences.

Stay alert. SE24 needs lerts

:)

It looks like we'll have to go to cafe prov to celebrate! Those signs were indeed gross- do you think they'll try again with, say, a muted pastel colour? Let's hope not. Viva la Herne Hill!

:D

Rather slow on the uptake to realise how these 'Welcome to ...' signs are appearing all round the borough.

The only 'Welcome to Walworth' sign I've (so far) seen is at the bottom of Albany Road, as you're coming north(ish)wards from Old Kent Road Tescos.
Saw this on Saturday. It's a fetching mauve colour ...

Now going to look out for others as I wander or cycle round Southwark.

That Toby Eckersley is a long-time Tory Councillor in Southwark, at one time, I think, the only one. He's done well to get rid of that sign though** -- has it reappeared further up towards Dulwich proper?

**Sorry, unable to praise any Tory anywhere ever, even when they deserve credit, without using qualifying words like 'though' :p

A mate of mine who lives in that part of Herne Hill that was so briefly Dulwich had a leaflet through the door from Southwark Tories, claiming total responsibility for the recent liberation of the area.

I would like to point out I am not now, nor have ever been, a member of the Conservative Party. I like a good party, but that isn't one.

Thank you. :)
