Embarrassed that i still havent learned to drive!

I'm 29 and I don't have a licence. I can drive, but I failed my test twice when i was 20 and then couldn't afford to keep trying. I'd like a car now, but I could never afford one before

I wonder if I could get a Chinese drivers licence :hmm:

I'd probably fail for not using the horn enough and paying attention to traffic lights :(

there's not much point learning unless you're going to be driving fairly regularly, imo.

certainly if you pass and then don't drive at all for more than a couple of months, you'd probably need at least one more lesson with dual controls to get back into the swing.

i passed at 18 but didn't drive til i was 22. booked three refresher lessons but only needed two.

there are advantages to having a licence even if you don't have a car. it's good for your insurance, and you might be able to use other peoples cars in certain situations...

yeah, but if you hadn't driven since you passed, and that was a while ago... you might end up pranging other people's cars!

Yeah, that's what puts me off - I could learn to drive, but then I live 2 miles away from work, so not much point getting a car that going to be sitting around unused most of the time.

My boss occasionally nags me about learning to drive so I could go out and investigate claims (I would get a company car) but it's not really what I want to do.

Am nearly 30. Don't drive. My girlfriend does (she works out of town) but I live in the city and it takes me 15 minutes to ride to work. It would be nice I think when the baby is a bit older as we can get the ferry to England rather than fly(my girlfriend doesn't want to drive in England) and we can go on camping holidays up North and around Europe.

if i was her i'd have been keen for you to learn before the baby was born. grinder's going to have to get over his 'london driving' thing if he's going to knock me up - i'm not getting a cab to the hozzie.:mad:

well we didn't really, we got a cab (only a short distance) but she was riding her bike 2 days before the birth.

I am getting one of these later in the year.

oh god, no offence boris, but i hate those thigs. kids love them thoguh

i am 31(nearly 32) and cannot drive  well;, i know how, but have no licence....too frightened now

Yup, I'm 31 and I'm learning now... I think I'll finally get to test this autumn, having originally hoped I'd manage to get there in about May. :o

I'm not embarrassed though, really - in London if you're healthy, childless and your job doesn't require it, there's no need to drive anyway - it's just an extra expense. But I wanted to get it sorted before I have any more kids, as, while I've found getting around with one baby no huge problem on public transport, I wouldn't fancy having to ferry a baby and small child around on my own much of the time.

It will also be easier to get to my mum's once I drive. Touch wood, I'll manage it by the end of the year.

I think it is true, the longer you leave it, the harder it is! I started learning last November, so it will have taken me nearly a year to get to test (although i did lose a 6-8 weeks of lesson time over the period as his last car kept packing up!)

I didn't learn earlier because I didn't like the idea of learning, then not doing it for years, as would have happened if I'd passed, say, 10 years ago.

never too late, i passed at 32, I was terrified of driving before hand, and afterwards too - driving in hackney  but once you have been driving a while, you forget what the nerves were all about

When I was in the Netherlands staying with friends it was a revelation seeing how different the scene was outside a nursery. We'd cycled along to pick up my friend's kid and just about every parent turned up on a bike (with trailer or chold seat). I think I saw one car there.

It made me kind of embarrassed to be honest when I thought of what the scene would look like outside a UK school, with a long string of noisy, polluting cars and 4x4s taking their children a mile or so.

cumbersome. heavy. not really suited to british roads. bit ott in my view

i think i would only bother to learn to drive if i move out of london

Just as well won't be riding it on British roads. :D I did see a guy riding one over the roundabout near Buckingham palace last year with his kids in the front. Thought he was incredibly stupid to put his kids in danger like that. They weren't wearing helmets either.

This is more like it.

I'm hoping to walk Ez to school as much as poss when she gets to that age. My folks lived on a road with a bunch of schools nearby and it was so annoying how much traffic could have been cut if everyone who was near walked (which was a lot of them) and everyone who could share a lift, shared. It's made me a bit militant about it!

Presumably by this you mean 'get some driving experience under your belt before having a big break' kinda thing?

I've had a licence since I was 17, and have only driven 5 or 6 times in the last 5 years as I don't have a car, living in London (altho now I've joined zipcar I can see that changing)...

Agree with that. I passed at 18 and needed to drive for work and uni but got rid of my car when I moved to London when I was 23.

Since then I drove about 4 times (once in Italy ) till about 18 months ago and then joined Streetcar and have used that about 6 or 7 times. Really handy for long distances or things like going to Ikea if you've got big stuff to get :)

I'm in my 30s, I can't drive, and I don't give a shit. Why would I give a shit? I can't ride a camel either.
A genuine LOL moment! :D

I'm 27 and can't drive. I must admit when I think about it it is very daunting but then when I also think about the cost of the lessons, theory, test(s), petrol, insurance, oh yea, and a car, I just can't envision ever being able to afford it!

It would be useful but it would cost a shit load more than using public transport
