Email access problem - HELP!!!!!

If Haylz's using Outlook Express as well, given that the account worked on her computer. You could on yours export the account as an IIF file from within OE and import it on to hers.

If it works on hers then, you've isolated the problem to something else on the machine. If not, it's probably something not set right. Some iSPs need you to check the. "My provider requires authentication box."

I use mail not outlook....i could change i suppose to see if it works:)

His new mac will be here soon, will that sort any of the probs do you think...??:)

Seems hassle to install a new mail client though. Just a way of double checking all the account settings really.

Will his new computer enable him to acccess the mail account. hmmm. Should do, if.
A. The account info is correct.
B. Virgin have given the correct account info, protocols used, server names etc.
C. There's no firewall issues.

What did you mean then...? I'd be doing something like

Code:
telnet my.email.com 995
Or how-ever the telnet client program opens a remote connection. On OS 9 its probably going to be a gui...
If the OP doesn't want the hassle of installing another email client, what's wrong with jaed's suggestion of running the pop3 session by hand using telnet ?

Also if it allows standard pop3 on 110 you may get a specific error back from the server that your mail client is hiding.

Don't know TBH, though I'd think the later operating systems do. Tiger is it? I'm Windows user.

Are you using a router to get online or a USB modem? Because most routers have some firewall capability built in. Only an ammiture at this stuff myself. Would seem weird if the firewall was blocking access to only one acocunt though, rather than any email connections.

Sorry, erm, someone who knows more will be along later.

Thanks Haylz, I was just going to throw that it. This email account has been working fine until 2 weeks ago. I have set up 100s of email accounts so its not the settings.

Just to put everyone in de picture. The problem email account is set up on me main computer G3 (running 9.2 and using Outlook Express) which as you all have gathered by now I can't get me emails. My broadband connection goes through an apple airport which feeds me g4 laptop (running MACX and using Mail which I have set up the problematic email account and guess what it don't work on that either but when I set it up on Haylz G4 computer running MACX and using Mail it works which suggest it can't be a server or ISP problem).

Fucking bizzare folks - thanks for alll your input but fuck knows.

Just to make it even more strange there are 4 websites which I have designed - I could always access them from my computer. The day the email account went shitty I could'nt access any of them - not on the g3 running IE5 on me G4 running safari or me PC laptop running IE all feeding off the same connection. But I can view them on Haylz and me mates computer. Yet again fucking strange man. Heavy shit. Fucking stumped.
I have emptied caches, cookies - shut the fucking modem for 2 minutes and switched it back on - phone Virgin and me hosting company and still fuck all.

Fuck it who needs technology - oh yeaah I do its me job - bollocks

This does seem very strange. It may be worth downloading the thunderbird email client (or any other client) and setting up the account up from scratch. This would rule out a client issue.

Another option would be to access the control panel for the domains, deleting the affected email accounts and then recreating them. Also, you're running OS 9 which is quite outdated, it may be worth upgrading the OS.

Finally, have you changed the dns settings on the affected mac at all? I know virgin had DNS issues a while back, it may not resolve the problem but could be worth trying OpenDNS servers. Instructions here

The OpenDNS servers :

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

You read the bit about this being a Mac, right?

Guess what folks - all of a sudden after about 2 weeks of being down everything works again. The fucking email and all the websites that I couldn't see on my computer!!! How fucking strange folks. I have experienced things being down for a bit but when it went past over a week in was starting to bug the shit out of me. I hate it when things don't work!

Thankyou all for your time in trying to help me resolve this bizzare issue. :)

Yeah. I've not personally seen the Mac version of Outlook Express. Thought the import / export account thing would work the same way as on the Windows one. But I missed Haylz was using Mail rather than OE.

Glad to hear it's working now. Bloody frustrating not to be able to pin point what it was though.
