election results

To be honest the whole GPEW website service has been pretty bad this year, much worse than last year. They had Jon Hooper down as a gain in Torridge for hours, when he actually lost!

pinguppete is going to come and shout at me now.... :D

Matt

P.S. The Welwyn Hatfield loss was a Labour defecter defending as a Green.

Just to add to the heartbreak of not gaining Southville in Bristol by six votes -Greens failed to gain a seat in norwich (thorpe hamlet ward) from the Lib Dems by ONE VOTE!

Made all the more annoying by the fact that I was canvassing there all of last weekend.

Matt

Greens have taken the two Regency ward seats in Brighton; one from Labour and one from the Lib Dems. I think that means that might do rather well overall.

Actually I agree with you Matt - I think it is sorted. The office don't seem to have managed to have much sleep!

Unhelpfully, Party Office isn't listing losses, which makes it difficult to follow what our net gains are. I think we've either gained 10 or 11 net thus far.

Matt

WOW - 6 gains in Brighton. There are 12 Green councillors there now, making it the biggest Green Group in the country.

Whole council election for next 4 years of course, so dramatic changes are more likely than in Met districts or councils with thirds.

F_G,

Well, yes, but doubling representation isn't to be sniffed at. Especially in a unitary, because we're talking scores of thousands of voters.

especially since I seem to remember that the Brighton greens had some very good results at the last general election. how many seats on that council, BTW?

The most worrying thing for me is that the BNP did extremely well in North Wales and came close to getting their first AM in the Welsh Assembly, this would have been a catastrophe and given them a very high profile in Wales.

hmm... while I'm pleased that the Greens have done so well in Brighton (I did vote for them), the Labour meltdown here means that the Conservatives now have overall control of the council; the first time Labour haven't been in control since 1984:

Conservatives: 26
Labour: 13
Green: 12
Lib Dem: 2
Others: 1

Not sure how I feel about that yet.

For years Labour have run the council like they own it, showing total disregard for the electorate: pushing through over-developments at Black Rock & King Alfreds, letting the pier fall into the sea and large parts of the seafront get run down, ignoring residents feedback on consultations about the parking review and communal bins. Any criticism of them has been met with the cry: if you don't vote for us, the tories will get in!!!11!!

Well now people haven't voted for them, and the Conservatives have got in.

Have to wait and see what the local impact of that'll be...

The Tories don't have overall control of Brighton and Hove. They are the largest party, but thats not the same thing.

*does maths*

yer right :)

I've also done the maths for Brighton and I have 26 + 12 + 2 (40) vs 13 + 1 (14) which gives the Tories overall control ;)

(Or is a vote for the Lib Dems and Greens not a vote for the Tories in Brighton like it is elsewhere?! :D )

Labour have done well in Leeds but fucked it in Sheffield!
three losses, two incredibly close, and one very local (and entirely avoidable for labour). bnp & respect not encroaching further into their votes in the wards they stood in previously.

far from a dreadful night for them, they'll probably form a minority administration and win it back next year anyway!

Green loss in Shepway - but rumours of a good result in Lancaster, don't know details yet.

Matt

P.S. Lancaster Greens gain FIVE. Up to twelve councillors.
