Elder Scrolls IV - Oblivion

Much fun so far!

The geography, flora and fauna - especially in the "Mania" areas is great and a refreshing change from the usual stuff.

Some nice new weapons and bad guys, and interesting NPC's - all good!

The latest patch has really improved visuals I think but I've not played it for a while and can't remember if it was always that good.

I've got a guy who is lethal with hand-to-hand. Took me ages to get him to actually start killing stuff but I need no armour or weapons now.

finished the main quest in oblvion 4, it was the best game I've played for ages, just so engrossing and a real liveable world!

bored now

done loads of side quests - fighters guild, thieves guild etc

it looks absolutely gorgeous on my X1950XT gfx card, I still find myself just looking at lapping water / lovely trees / skin textures on nasty monsties trying to kill me

... just waiting for my mate to send me the expansion pack now!

I wasn't that fussed by the main quest TBH,

I became:

Leader of the Dark Brotherhood
The Grey Fox
Head of the Wizards Guild
and finished a huge amount of side quests, including most of the fighters guild ones before I even bothered with the main quest!

I then went on to complete the Knights of the Nine and am now half-way through the Shivering Isles.

:)

So far, so not impressed. Admittedly I've only left the dungeons and pissed off a few deer/wolves/imperial guard, but it feels very clunky. Like a last-gen game with slightly nicer graphics.

The lack of a regular autosave is doing my head in as well.. I don't want to have to remember to save every time I sense trouble, GRRRRR!

I played for a while last night then died when attacked by 4 wolves, lost a good 20 minutes play, thought "Fuck it" and turned R6: Vegas on.

Tell me there's a way to change the autosave?! Otherwise I'll probably ebay it. Such a shame, 'cos I love geeky shit like that.

argh! I have oblivion fever!

about 15 hours in, kajit assassin fella... I was a member of the mage and fighter guild but apparently I stole from them (don't remember, but it's possible) and I keep getting sidetracked helping villagers and going into ruins that I probably shouldn't...

I get killed a lot though. Maybe I should try just nicking things instead of trying to kill trolls and people in full armour who keep going on about their sword needing souls and how it will eat well tonight

Cool - did you see my advice on the other thread?

:)

I found moving the difficulty slider a smidge to the left produced a more entertaining gameplay experience. All it does is increase the amount of damage you do and reduce the amount of damage you take and it is infinitely adjustable.

yes I did. I'm in bravile now, got the day off work tomorrow, so will be attempting to join the thieves guild and selecting my assassination target to join the dark brotherhood. I don't want to pick somebody who'll give me a quest later on if they're still alive.. so maybe somebody who's already been involved in one... I feel bad about killing old man odiil or the lizard woman I just rescued from the brethren. Maybe I'm not cut out to be an assassin after all...

I actually don't mind the combat difficulty... it makes it more important to creep about rather than wade in I suppose. I actually enjoyed this morning, nicking something from under the nose of this big troll and then legging it as quick as I could to the exit while it chased me! I guess that's what being a thief is all about... it is a bit annoying when a goblin kills you though... I need better poison! :D

HA! HA! HA!

I've just joined the dark brotherhood. done my first mission and got the shroud armour.

which means I can sell my old armour.

which means I can buy the 2-handed akaviri warblade.

which is what I have wanted to do for the past week.

bwaahahahaha!

I'm gonna kick some arse! :D

love it.

Morrowind is definitely a better game in almost every respect, i've come to think.

Well except for the respect of its ludicrously convoluted user accessibility. And pisspoor combat. And lack of fast-travelling. And lack of character dialogue.

Think it through.

The combat's not great, but I like the general lack of fast travelling. It encourages you to learn teleport spells and use public transport. ;)

And there's something far more satisfying about the assassination missions when you have to trek through miles of wilderness to take out your target.

And Morrowind had 10x the amount of character dialogue as Oblivion, and it's of better quality. They shot themselves in the foot by having actors voice every line, it imposed a needless limitation on the quantity and depth of conversations.

I could be biased because i'm a member of an Elder Scrolls modding community, and it's a lot easier to do cool things with the Morrowind engine.
