Edward Woodward (Callan, Wickerman) dead

RIP indeed.

By all accounts he wasn't only a terrific actor, but also a very pleasant person as well. I bumped into him when I was at secondary school, as he lived in the West Country, and he seemed a very pleasant and humble bloke to me.

rip - I used to drink with his son who must have been about 60 - mental bloke, entertaining though, hope he is ok :(

The Equaliser made him a huge star internationly, thought he was brilliant in The Wickerman and Breaker Morant, married to the actress who played Frank Spencers wife in 'Some Mothers Do Have Them'

Yep, Michele Dotrice.

I've always thought it odd, given his stellar performances in lead roles, coupled with the fact that, by all accounts he wasn't a remotely difficult person to work with, that he didn't get more lead roles as his considerable talent certainly merited.

That said, he has been described as a very humble and grounded man, who always considered himself lucky to be working at all. Maybe that counted against him in some way, I don't know.

At one time both his sons were reckoned to become as great as actors as he was, yet they seem to have disappeared without trace.

Always remember that memorable recurring image in Callen of a light bulb swinging in a prison cell before being shattered by a bullet

very sad. i met him and his wife michelle dotrice when they were performing at a play together in plymouth a few years back. they were a very warm and charming couple
