EDM 1583 Remploy Factory Closures

Irenick OK people are segregated in the workplace by grade pay level etc....But it is not quite the same as having totally segregated workshops for disabled people.

What is quite the same as anything else, anyway? Separation from those we’d rather be with for considerable parts of our day is the norm for most workers. You could call it degrees of segregation. So, by how many degrees of segregation are you from those you’d rather spend time with, but can't because you're banged up in your 'workshop'?

The debate around the future of Remploy factories fired up again as the disability employment provider announced a 70 per cent hike in the number of mainstream jobs it helped secure for disabled people in the first financial quarter of this year. It said that its Interwork scheme, which partners with companies such as Asda and B&Q, had helped 1,500 disabled people into mainstream jobs between March and June.

The news comes after Remploy’s controversial announcement of plans to close 32 of its 83 factories and merge 11 more. Factory jobs cost the government-funded body £20,000 a year per person, compared to a one-off £5,000 for a mainstream placement.

But a report from MPs voiced concern that a high turnover rate for the types of jobs secured by Interwork, which is about three years, will leave many disabled people without long-term job security.

As usual DN is baring its political teeth; and, getting in low down and dirty with the Remploy issue. Here we have the country’s premier disability newspaper, faced with the biggest industrial and political disability employment story it’s ever likely to get; and what sort of coverage does it give? Less space than ‘Scooter-users on the warpath’.

Remploy have claimed they found employment in the mainstream for over 5,000 disabled people; there was a symbolic point being made here. The point was that for the first time Remploy had placed more people in mainstream employment than worked in their factories – factory populations down to 4,800.

If Remploy did have a magic formula that placed disabled people into decent mainstream employment. I’d be knocking at their door. The reality is that they are signing up with the same kind of companies that abused the YOPS scheme back in the 1980s.

50% of disabled people progressed into mainstream through Remploy’s Interwork scheme hold down jobs for less than six months, many for just a few weeks. Of the remaining 50%, half of these remain in situ for less than three years.

This is hardly secure and sustainable employment for the most vulnerable and discriminated group of people in the labour market.

Hold on, Remploy claim to have found work for over 5,000 people last year. When, what they really mean is, that they’ve made 5,000 placements, 50% of which have lasted less than six months. That isn’t the same as finding worthwhile sustainable employment for over 5,000 disabled people in one year – now, is it?

You might find there's more opportunity for discussion of such issues if you stick to posts like your last one.

Because your post prior to that is such a steaming pile of poo, you put me off getting involved tbf. A bigot is a bigot is a bigot. And you reveal some quite disturbing views with your 'fat lazy cunt' diatribe quite simply. Imvho.

No, it isn't you tbaldwin. Our chum Irenick feels it worthwhile to go back and edit posts after posting them, when s/he's pulled up on some choice use of language.

And because I didn't actually quote the post, the low-life scum-sucking bastard then has the temerity to attempt to ridicule me. What a fucking cunt. Welcome to ignore Irenick you duplicitous, self-serving utter wanker.

So you didn't edit your post at all then, to remove the pretty low language that betrayed a pretty prejudicial state of mind? And, like, pretend that you didn't post that it up at all?

Rather than just hold your hand up and say fair enough, you mislead and provoke a reaction. Well done. I really don't like liars and people who decieve.

See ya. Fool. You might like to think about who your friends are.
