Eddie Murphy: Shit/Not shit

Eddie Murphy?

I find the idea of Eddie Murphy slagging off gay people dressed in tight purple/red leather jumpsuits dented my irony meter a teeny bit.

Was briefly good in the early 80s but has been utterly & almost continuously fucking shit ever since. So I'm wavering here...

He's funny.

On STD's:

Eddie: Doctor, what do you do when fire shoots out of your dick?

Doctor: Let me see, you're getting a burning sensation when you urinate?

Eddie: NO, FIRE, SHOOTS OUT OF MY DICK!

:D

Like most others have said, Trading Places (which I was fortunate to see whilst bunking off school, only because they wouldn't let me in to see Sudden Impact) is excellent, and I would also say the same about the first Beverley Hills Cop, whilst Coming to America is also very watchable imo.

Last ten years though, utter shite. I particularly enjoed Jonathin Ross's review of his latest pile if crap, Norbit -

I had a unique experience while watching 'Norbit', in a reasonably full screening room, populated by an audience representing what advertisers would call "a broad demographic." And that unique experience was that I didn't hear anybody laugh. Not once, Just a couple of nervous titters, probably induced by the fact that this supposed comedy is fuelled by hatred.

From its unrelenting misogyny to its outright racism, this is a thoroughly poisonous film, and as I left the preview theatre - sweating profusely - I was torn between near-despair about the future of the species and a desire to force Eddie Murphy into therapy in order to sort out his obviously considerable "issues".

As you may imagine, I'm not a particularly sensitive consumer of comedy. I'll defend anyone's right to make a joke about pretty much anything, but there are attempts at humour here which are miles beyond the pale, and executed in a way which is almost physically painful to behold.

And if the rumours are true, and 'Norbit' contributed to Eddie Murphy's failure to win the Oscar for 'Dreamgirls' when he was favourite for the award, then all power to the Academy voters. This monumentally unpleasant film deserves all the censure it gets.

I would have to agree that his earlier films were watchable. Though the 'Delirious' show mostly made for uncomfortable viewing. 'Raw' is available on googlevideo thingy, but I can't remember that one too well. All in all, he tends to get on my wick these days. I'm surprised he hasn't tried more dramatic roles instead of mostly hiding behind grotesque prosphetics.

Nice bump Badgers :)

I like a fair lot of his movies, my fav' of them all is Coming to America, I love that movie.

If I was to vote I'd say Not Shite.

Coming to America and Trading Places have a sort of 80's nostalgia for me but not high on my 'watch again' list now.

I guess he needs to keep rolling out films as those kids he never fathered need paying for ;)

The bad guys in Trading Places have a brief cameo in Coming to America

As does an uncredited Samuel L Jackson as the shotgun wielding bloke who tries to hold up McRonalds

He was very much of his time, following on in a similar vein to Richard Pryor. And, as appears to be the nature of such things, he has now been eclipsed (most notably) by Chris Rock and Chris Tucker (at least as far as Mr Tucker is concerned).

What's the film with Steve Martin where they are making a movie and Murphy plays some big famous movie star and also a nerdy bloke who looks like the big famous film star?

He's good in that. Very underrated film IMO.

Bowfinger.

Agree, it's a good film.

He is both shit and not shit.

An Eddie Murphy film is like flipping a coin. You got a 50 / 50 chance of it being truly dreadful or good.

He's an utter prick (his treatment of Mel B and the kid he had with her is appalling) and has made some of the worst films I've ever seen – and yet... on form in the likes of Trading Places, 48 Hours and even Bowfinger, I think he's hilarious. So, perhaps regrettably, not shit.

Following on from a post on the "Feelgood Movies" thread:

Eddie Murphy: Shit/Not shit?

Arguably Not shit: Trading Places, Golden Child, Beverly Hills Cop I, 48 Hours....maybe, A CGI Donkey, Dream Girls (apparently) and maybe, maybe; Coming to America.

Utter Shit: Vampire in Brooklyn, Nutty Professor 1&2, Metro, Holy Man, Dr Doolittle 1&2, I Spy, Daddy Daycare, Showtime, Pluto Nash, Norbit and every bit of stand-up he ever did.

So?

I would remove those emboldened into shit, but would, without fucking doubnt, add both Raw and Delirious, both fucking outstanding.

Er no.

Delirious was very good.

However, Raw was very very lame in comparison. The only really funny bit is when he tells a heckler to Shut up bitch.

Annoyingly Raw is the only one they ever show on TV. Have they lost the tape for Delirious in a studio fire or something?

i thought Delirious had been deleted....dunno where i got that from though. we've got it on dvd.

i think, as a very young man, he was almost brilliant.

but like many others, he became crapper than the crappest thing.

For me (not including voices in animations):

Excelent:
The Golden Child
Coming to America
Holy Man
Bowfinger

Good:
Trading Places
48 Hours
Beverly Hills Cop 1&2

Bad
Beverly Hills Cop 3
Doctor DoLittle
Daddy Day Care

Very bad:
N/A

Truly really awfull crimes against film and humanity:
Everything else he has done which i can't even bear to name.

Every bit of film work he's done that I've seen has been shit, except the barber shop boys in Coming to America.

As a stand-up: brilliant, not as good as Pryor but better than Chris Rock, and fuck you and your whore of a mother if you think otherwise: .
