East London Line Phase 2 Confirmed

I guess they had to choose the cheapest option.

Thing is, there's already a flat junction West of Brixton that would let trains on the North tracks get back onto the South in time to use the platforms at Clapham. All that would be required is a matching junction East of Brixton somewhere. I can only guess that running ELLX trains on those tracks would conflict with services heading to/from Catford/Sevenoaks. Which is crazy, because that's just 2tph each way.

Well, it would be interesting to know whether it's just due to the cost of extra platforms or down to operational reasons.

Actually, I think I came up with almost exactly the same plan last time we were discussing this, techter:

There must be something we're missing here. It's too obvious.

What's too obvious?

As a part-time Forest Hill resident, I would certainly like a Brixton stop. It's ridiculously difficult to move 'laterally' across south london. The P4 single decker bus service is a joke. Going north to go south, via a ELL2 Urban 75 special express, would be preferable!

Yes. Getting from Brixton to somewhere like Deptford is a real pain.

Surrey Canal Road is still up for grabs. Thing is, it'll be integrated with the bridge over the road, so if it doesn't get built now, it never will (for a long time anyway). TFL are doing a feasibility study or something. Personally, I reckon a way will be found.

Does anyone know what platform at Clapham Junction this new ELL2 will terminate at?

Would be good if it was the one adjoining the other 'Overground' line at CJ which heads north to Kensington Olympia, to make more of an 'interchange', otherwise CJ can be a bit of a schlep....

Given the Overground branding around the entrance to platform 2 at CJ, that would seem to be the obvious place, whether via a reinstated platform 1, or possibly if platform 2 is long enough to be split into a 2a and 2b?

I'm not sure that making it adjacent to the other overground platform necessarily makes sense, as people arriving at clapham junction are surely just as likely to be continuing their journeys with any of the other services from there.

I suppose so. Except TFL are half-marketing it as an overground Circle line for outer London, in which case the interchanges at stations need to be fairly adjacent.

I a few weeks ago caught the London Bridge to Victoria train from Forest Hill to CJ, to change at CJ onto the Overground to Olympia. I had four minutes according to the timetable, miraculously the trains arrived/left on time, but four minutes was only just enough to disembark, find the info for which platform I needed (the furthest away physically possible) and sprint it. Big station, Clapham Junciont.

I think its no 1 platform reinstated - involving an "interesting" * trip via the low level lines from Wandsworth Road to Clapham Jct. Too much through traffic for the South via Platform 17 to allow standing trains to reverse direction there.

*Interesting to some - you will understand if you are on of these people :D

Re Brixton High level or East Brixton - its been re-worked many times and always comes out too expensive / difficult etc - but lets be positive - once the service is up and running - extra station(s) can be added if it fits the timetable and funding can be found. (viz - West London line which has had 2 extra stations added - and its only been running as a 30 min service for 12 years - and its now 5 trains per hour - and all very busy !)

I wondered how it was going to get from Wandsworth Road to Clapham Junction. Aren't those low level tracks heavily used freight lines? There were always freight trains rumbling through Wandsworth Road when I used it.

I bet users of Wandsworth Road and Clapham High Street will be pissed off when this comes to fruition. A currently useful service to either Victoria or London Bridge replaced by a service to Clapham Junction or East London via a scenic route through South East London.

Is that service being completely withdrawn then?

The South London Rus reccomends a Victoria - Denmark Hill - Bellingham service with the ELLX extension.

The Ludgate lines and Battersea reversible lines will need some money spent on them to allow ELLX and freight to (happily) co-exist - more reversible lines and signalling - as those lines form a bolt hole for recessing and regulating freight trains off the West London line and the very busy SE London passenger routes.

Surrey Canal Road station has funding secured through conditions set as part of the planning permission now granted for redevelopment of the land around Miwall FC. The station is required to be complete within 2 years of ground being broken for the project. http://www.londonreconnections.com/2011/developer-funding-for-surrey-canal-road-agreed/

On the subject of Clapham Junction platforms: The old platform 1 track structure was found to be in much worse condition than thought and can't be rebuilt in the budget. Therefore, platform 2 will serve both routes, with a junctioni mid-platform to switch trains onto the middle track

What's the current ETA of the ELL extension then? It's supposed to be early 2012, right?

Noticed recently they've started rebuilding the bit of link track near Surrey Canal.

2013, I'm afraid.
EDIT: "Late 2012"

http://www.tfl.gov.uk/corporate/projectsandschemes/15401.aspx

Early 2011
Preparatory works - some tree and vegetation removal, diverting utilities

Appointing a contractor to build the new railway
Spring 2011 to summer 2012
Constructing the new 1.3km railway, including signalling, telecoms and power
Summer to autumn 2012
Testing new trains, signalling and other systems and training drivers before passenger services commence
Late 2012
Line opens - trains run from Dalston Junction to Clapham Junction via Surrey Quays

First set of points (on the Up South London between Queen's Road and South Bermondsey) went in weekend before last. Work on the spur to Surrey Quays has been going on for some time (2-3 months?).

There's a new railway bridge over Surrey Canal Road, it went up a couple of weeks ago. Bloody nightmare living around here with all the work going on atm, I'll be glad when it's all finished.

There's going to a new station on the south side of that bridge. I wouldn't get your hopes up for a quiet life, either - that whole area around Surrey Canal Road and the staidum is going to be redeveloped. Homes, offices, shops, sports facilities. Big project.

recently there's been notices put up around the place about compulsory purchases on the Surrey Canal Road. Apparantly it's gonna look like this when it's finished
