Oh the food is shite, for sure.

I like the culture clashes on the street from the most painfully fashionable Nathen Barleys to the most traditional elderly muslims.

And some of the side streets around there too are amazing, like the road Tracey Emin lives on

...and the Taj supermarket is the nuts.

Yeah but don't you have kids?

If you have a family east London, or any part of London is not the place to bring a family up.

More to east London - it's great!

Nah, I've lived in the suburbs and in Bethnal Green with my young daughter, and this is way better. Tons of good parks, lots of free, quality museums and other attractions, lots of adventure playgrounds, the city farm, high-quality afterschool clubs, a lovely primary school, at least one secondary school with a good reputation (it helps that she's a girl), and, unlike in the suburbs, all of that's within walking distance. If we travel further afield, she goes for free. :) When I go out in the evening I don't have to travel far to find somewhere decent, so babysitting's easier (doesn't have to account for traveling time). It really is a very good place to bring up a child.

Sweet and Spicey is good though? and the New Tayyab next door to the East London Mosque is supposed to be fan-bloody-tastic...

and 93 ft east, and the vibe, etc etc are good clubs/bars/venues

Ten Bells, and the unmissable Golden Heart (poss the best traditional pub in Spitalfields).

Tayyabs is good - for sure. Much better than most of the sickly Brick Lane Bangla restaurants.

Sweet and Spicey also is very good, and cheap, went there with 5 people and the bill came to 33 quid...

The Landlady of the Golden Heart is routinely in the list of top 100 most important people in the British Art World... and gets entertainingly grumpy and drunk, from dancing on tables to glowering at eveyone in five minutes...

Oh and The Pride of Spitalfields.... great great pub...

I lived just off Commercial Road about halfway between Shadwell and Limehouse DLR stations before moving to Spain exactly 2 years ago to the day.

My only complaint about the area was that my landlords took 8 months to supply hot water in an expensive flat with no bath (so, no heating pans on cooker etc).

Other than that it was a great area to live. Good pubs and bars. The very best Indian restaraunts and very affordable. Great riverside walks with pubs with river views. Lots of small squares and parks. Spitafields within a short walk. The City only a 30 minute walk away. Canary Wharf was even worth an occassional visit.

Used to enjoy a Sunday walk from Limehouse to Greenwhich.

2 years ago I managed to find a very good deal on an experimental refurbed estate. Good price, very nice 2 bed flat, but like I said - no hot water for 8 months spoiled things.

The area can feel a little intimidating for late walks home alone but, I never actually ran into trouble myself.

It doesn't have the same community vibe as other areas. In fact, with all the new and expensive stuff happening it does seem to be developing an 'us' and 'them' syndrome.

I'd move back if I wanted to move back to London. I don't though.

Have you ever talked to her? She is a clueless idiot

I moved from Kingston to Bow about 4 years ago (and since moved to SE London), it was a great move, bloody small mindedness of Surrey had done my head in. I recommend it!
