I don't live in brixton - too pricey too!

but you're right about it being pricey everywhere - 3 years ago I was paying about £400 per month for a 3 bedroom house back home!

Where was that? Not London?

Very good deal - you must have been gutted to discover London prices!

Oh my giddy aunt - my M&D live in Thamesmead, I just had a quick search on prices there, thinking I'd be able to say - AHA! - that's the place to live for cheap rentals :D But no .... not spectacularly cheaper .

Oops, I seem to have derailed miss giggles' thread :o

Confusing poll as to my mind "East London" is more Stratford, Leyton, West Ham, Plaistow, Canning Town - much of which is crap (although not Wanstead, parts of Leytonstone, Woodford).

If we're talking Stepney and Befnal Green, then that's more "East End" than East London. The East End has a lot to recommend it but is certainly a bit grimy and might be a bit of a culture shock for a Richmond-dweller!

How about Bow or as someone has said Vicky Park / South Hackney as a compromise? Rents are a bit cheaper in Bow than on the fringe of the City and it is a bit less grimy (talking only of parts N of Bow Rd - S you are getting into bandit country).

No, I left London properly a few weeks back (lived in Epping for 6 years), but am originally from East London and know the areas well.

You will notice how grimey it is, not saying it's bad just part of inner-city life. Plus the notion of walking home safely is another one I'd re-think.

If you're thinking of East London, I'd recommend Leytonstone or Wanstead.

You can enjoy what's going on without the endless night-buses and still live in a decent place.

I live in a place that has 2 pubs, a conveniece store and an Indian. That's it. I don't really miss the filth & crime of London. :)

Yeah but don't you have kids?

If you have a family east London, or any part of London is not the place to bring a family up.

More to east London - it's great!

bow is a good location for a london lifestyle but bow itself is ugly and boring.

nah it ain't - there's some gorgeous bits to bow. lovely victorian squares and cute olde pubs. roman road market is teh cool an all ! loved it when i lived there, but it too expensive for me these days (to buy at least) cos it's got a tube, so hackney it is (which is better anyway)

I have no kids. It always amazes me how people think a girl from Richmond couldn't cope in the east end.

I do sometimes leave here y'know.:D

I wouldn't claim you couldn't (cos I don't know you!) but if you are not accustomed to a type of environment it can be a slight culture shock. I used to live there but now go infrequently. I don't really see that type of environment anymore as where I live is pretty quiet and I work in the city. Most of the time I just see the bits in between. I know that I was living in the East End again there would be a bit of readjustment. Nothing radical, but life is slightly different in the various parts of London.

i guess i'm thiking of where my mates live down by the bow flyover and bow church and whatnot. but yeah, if you get away from the main roads i'll agree!

is barkin n dagenham east london or essex, just out of interest, most peeps i know would say essex but its a bit of a grey area.

east london's not really as bad as people say it is, last time i was in tower hamlets it was wierd, got lost tryin to get from sarff of tower bridge to fenchurch street, wandered thu st cath's dock (double plus posh) to aldgate east (duoble plus unposh) via cable street, nice mural!

I've lived in a few places in east London, including Stratford. I wouldn't recommend it, if you're used to Richmond.

I would, however, really recommend Spitalfields or Brick Lane area. I used to live in the market buildings, and loved every minute of it. Not too easy to get stuff there, but keep an eye out. Shoreditch / Hoxton is great too, but a bit less tidy. It's proper city living, and you'll never be bored!

Docklands is dull - avoid.

I'd second that... I live in Spitalfields (well ok, on Brick Lane, but I can see the Hawksmore from the kitchen window)... its an ace area to live in... and good for transport (I can get to the west end in 25 mins from the front door, and brixton by bus in 35 mins)... getting increasingly expensive rentwise though

I can vouch for the crapness of West Ham and Canning Town. And the soulessness of Docklands. Been stuck here for 9 months and can't wait to move back to SW2.

Should be moving to Herne Hill at the end of January with any luck.

Before the formation of the GLC back in 1966 (correct me if I'm wrong), the old LCC border ran up the River Lee. Which made anywhere east of that effectively part of Essex. The Lee has always formed a kind of barrier between the eastern suburbs and the main bulk of London and even to this day, going east of the river, the place feels different. It is difficult to describe how but it definitely does...

Funnily enough, quite a few Millwall fans refuse to recognise West Ham as being a London club, saying that as it is east of the Lee, as far as they are concerned, it's an Essex club!

Anywhere east of the Roding still has Essex as a postal address so that makes it even more of a grey area. When you get out to Havering, there have been calls by some local residents' groups for the borough to be taken out of Greater London and restored to Essex. Some ever so slightly reactionary sentiments behind that idea methinks! Mind you, local politics in Havering is a bloody strange affair - just what do all these residents and ratepayers groups actually stand for? Then again, it's probably best not to dig too deeply...

I'd love to live on Brick Lane. Tis my favourite street in London.

Bethnal Green is ace and so is Victoria Park 'Village'.

Good pubs, good park. Oh and the canals

East London is the shizzle. Where I live is a lot like Eastenders but with more mosques and less white people - plus, a local pie and mash shop. Jellied eel anyone?

I'm not a particularly big fan of brick lane. Apart from the biegel shop. The "indian" restaurants there give a very bad impression of indian food :(

It has its downsides... I'm in the room on the drunken australian/cityboy shoutin/Galloway (even though I'm proud to have him as my M.P.) with megaphone at 9.30am on a saturday morning side of the flat... the back of the flat however you hear bird song and church bell chiming...

we were going to get a water pistol to shoot at annoying drunks (and build a grassy knoll on the otherside of brick lane to put people off the scent)... but we soon realised that would get an armed response unit out like that *clicks fingers*

Sweet and Spicey is good though? and the New Tayyab next door to the East London Mosque is supposed to be fan-bloody-tastic...

and 93 ft east, and the vibe, etc etc are good clubs/bars/venues

Oh the food is shite, for sure.

I like the culture clashes on the street from the most painfully fashionable Nathen Barleys to the most traditional elderly muslims.

And some of the side streets around there too are amazing, like the road Tracey Emin lives on
