Ear plug recommendations?

xenon

Culturally incoherent
Stupid boy, didn't have any for a doom metal gig I went to the other day. Upshot is I seem to now have some tinnitus. Although even as a child I can remember hearing something, when there was supposedly silence. Maybe I'm just more aware of it because noticed it quite sharply following the gig on Saturday night. Though has gone down a bit.

Anyway, to that end and protecting ears in future. Can anyone recommend some good protective ear plugs?

I buy some that they sell in Superdrug. They come in a little orange transparent circular plastic container that hold 3 pairs of earplugs. They are made of a kind of spongy material. They are fairly good and are meant to be used only once. You are not supposed to wash and re-use them, they absorb water. Don't buy the kind that are made of solid material that are meant for use when swimming.

I understand that there are some really expensive ones used by musicians, but I don't know where you get them or how expensive they are.

Will have a look. I am an ammiture musician myself, so may look for the specialised ones another time. Not currently able to turn anything up that loud.

Cheers. Will probably go with the cheaper ones for gigs for the moment.

The pricier ones if I ever get my own band together.

If this is actually tinnitus and not psychological in that I'm now just focussing on it. At least it's just the slight white noise kind. No bells and whistles, *touch wood*

I'm planning on buying some custom elacin ones when I can afford them. I've tried 3 types of the cheaper ones though (not elacin ones admittedly) and the alpine musicsafe ones are the my preferred plugs - they've just released an updated version and you get 3 sets of filters and a snazzy case - about £15 or so, excellent value is you ask me (they last for years if you look after them/don't lose them).

I thought tinnitus was just that buzzing noise but really badly and over long periods of time?
I was under the impression that it was a permanent condition of constant ringing that never goes away

That's why I said I had tinitus for two days rather than saying I had tinitus. :p

It might very well be but in that case it's still perfectly meaningful for me to qualify my ascription of it to myself temporally thus implying I have the symptoms but not the condition :p

Of course! Whatever it is, it ain't good and we should do as much to protect ourselves from it. Since no-one wants to stop going to clubs and gigs, earplugs it must be. One day I'll get round to it. :)

yeah I reckon I've had it since Saturday night. The initial ear ringing threshold shift went away. Threshold shift being that muffled under water quality sound has after exposure to loud noises. But I'm now aware of this white noise. Like the static on TV. Only noticed it in the past when very tired or had a heavy cold.

Defintely plugs for me before I go to any gigs again.

I used Boots wax ear plugs to drown out Pig's snoring, they are really good, only about £2 a box.

Yeah they're good. You can get just the right amount of volume at a concert by fiddling with these fellas.

The only ones worth getting IMO.

150 quid puts them into the only for musicians level. Mine have worn out now so I think I'll try the 10 quid dirty squat party edition. Look a little long, so might end up back at the Music II's.

Sunray, let us know how they go please!

I'm joining a band, and really don't want to lose my hearing! I'm just going to use the foam ones until I can work out whether I have to spend £140 on proper ones.

Fair enough, I bought a pair a while ago though and didn't think they did a thing. Fucked me off in fact, as I had a perfectly decent pair at home but I really needed them for party. Fitted really badly as well.

So, I've been using my custom ear plugs for a little while now. They're brilliant, but I think 25db is too much reduction for playing gigs and rehearsing. 15db is probably the right amount for me, but it'll cost another £60 for new filters.
