Ear piercing

just realised i can't get my ears pierced today :( as I have to go for another MRI scan next week so would have to take them out. how disappointing!

Don't get pierced with a gun! They can't be autoclaved, and hepatitis can last for 3 months on surfaces. The metal has traces of nickel in them which you could be allergic to (most piercers use titanium), the post may be too short to accomodate for the swelling and that could make it embed, the butterfly back traps dirt, and the blunt end of the stud crushes the flesh to pierce it, whereas the needle is a lot sharper and causes less trauma, plus it will heal a lot quicker and cleaner. Go to a proper piercer, not a hairdresser or Claires *spits*

oh right....

Proper piercers will (or should) pierce anywhere, as long as the area is suitable. I've never heard of a piercer refusing to pierce lobes...the vast majority are very much against using guns...

i think its something to do with any swelling

also easier to keep clean and less likely to snag on things while still in the healing stage from what i remember

I thought that more places used needles now, but I've learned that people still use guns.

guns can only be used on the fleshy lobes, otherwise theres a risk of crushing cartilidge in othe areas. a lot of places that specialise in piercings dont seem to bother with the guns anymore as you can be more flexible in placement of the piercing and have a bigger choice of jewellry with a needle ( most gun piercing earings come in a little cartridge, so you'll only get a choice of a few, as its the earring itself that does the piercing)

I'm not worried about the pain, it's just the idea of making a hole in my ears is weirding me out :D

thats the avantage of a gun piercing. you dont see the needle, just feels like someone pinched/flicked your earlobe, with a needle it seems much more like someones about to put a hole in you :D doesnt hurt with a needle though either

claires accessories isnt a bad place to choose. all staff who do the piercing are trained, they use sterile equipment, they give good aftercare advice and good follow up if you do have a problem. my friends daughter had hers done there a few months ago, about 2 weeks the back of one of the earrings came off and the earing fell out. she was too screamish about putting it back in herself and worried about infection, they went back to claires, who cleaned the piercing and put it back in for her :)

i want to get my nose re-peirced. have had it done twice - once it fell out and closed up. had it re-done and it got infected  (GROSS) so i might just give up..

edit: i did however get my ears done at claire's about 7 years ago now... they're still pierced now. though obviously i'd imagine there's more of a risk involved with getting your nose done?

I'm glad Intastella posted on here - I was about to chime in with similar words.

If the piercers condescend or act bizarrely because you just want standard lobe piercings they're not worth your business. But any decent piercer should do just fine with such a piercing.

I've got all the piercing-related adornments I really want, but every now and then I contemplate another...

Tattoos, however, are another story altogether. Looking forward to the next one.

The guns are not sterile. Staff at Claires get a couple of hours training, then pierce each other. The aftercare advice is complete rubbish (harsh chemicals on a fresh piercing and twisting the jewellery is a massive no-no!), and they're not allowed to turn anyone down, they pierce through bumps because they don't get trained to recognise them and that they're supposed to avoid them. You're very limited in the placement with guns as well, so if you have very flashy or long lobes, they can't be centred. I actually hate Claires with a passion...i'm trying to organise a bit of a protest outside our local one, and hand out flyers with advice on and money off vouchers to get it done at a proper piercers nearby.

By the by, I had my ears pierced with a gun when I was a kid and, indeed, they're not placed very well (quite low and slightly uneven). I had a LOT of infections in the period after piercing. There's really no reason to get it done with a gun when there are so many capable, trained, attentive piercers who approach their work as a craft and a kind of sacred act, if you will, from which to choose.

the guns themselves arent sterilsed , but the earrings are sterile. i thought it was impossible to fully sterilise piercing guns anyway which is why needles are considered to be better?. the training involves basic anatomy of the ear, a demonstration video, practice on using the gun on without piercing before the trainer says yes or no to them practising on another human. not everyone who does the training ends up passing it. they are allowed to refuse to pierce if the lobe isnt suitable , they refused me as i have thick scar tissue in one lobe from an old piercing.

as for aftercare, i've always been told to gently clean then rotate the piercing. the assistant in claires who did my friends daughters piercing told her to gently wiggle the stud after she cleaned it and did say that, although it was company policy to provide cleaning solution with each piercing, she might find a mild antibacterial soap or saltwater better

i'm not disagreeing with you that obviously claires will have less training than a reputable piercer with years of experience. but at least around where i live, there are several places that will pierce ears without taking as much basic care as claires. and again, as you said, a decent piercer shouldnt make you feel uncomftable asking for any piercing, but there are some places that will make you feel uncomftable . presuably, the standard given in each claires store will vary anyway so maybe i've just been lucky with the piercings i've seen done by them

fwiw, i have 3 piercings in each lobe. 1 done by a needle in a not very hygeine peircing place , while i was drunk :o which not suprisingly became infected, so i let them close up, leaving a scar. 1 was from claires, which healed fine, 1 was in a local hairdressers with a gun which healed fine, and the last 1 from a place in brighton ( near wizard of ink, but i forget its name) who were brilliant, but i was getting my tragus, nose, lobe and labret all re-pierced done in one go, which took ages to heal well but that was more to do with me constantly catching it on earphones and clothing

claires seem to do well with kids, they do both ears at once with guns - less stress.

I've had 3 sets put in each ear with guns and no problems. Tbh I find the idea of needles slightly creepy.

Yeah, it is impossible to clean the guns. They have plastic bits that make a barrier between the skin and parts of the gun, but the blood spray from the impact of the gun forcing a blunt post thru the flesh sprays everywhere...all over the gun and in the piercers face because you're face is usually really close. The likelyhood of the next customer getting some of those blood particles transferred via the piercer touching the gun then the studs is very, very high, and there's no way to be 100% sure that they've not got any kind of blood borne disease. The studs are sterile (until they're touched while being put into the gun) but like i said, they're not suitable to pierce with...the posts are all standard size, and don't allow for different anatomies and swelling, the backs get filthy, hair gets twisted rounds the backs and the posts ETC. Twisting was the advice given years ago, but now it's accepted that it disturbs the fistula and prolongs healing time. All you need for cleaning is 1/4 tsp of salt and boiled, then cooled water. Soaps really just add ineccessary chemicals...last thing you need for a fresh piercing! And a tragus can take 12+ months to heal properly, coz it's thru cartilidge. My ears are rubbish with earphones...my tragus piercings are the only reason they stay in now! :D

That's just coz you've grown up during the time when guns were the only accepted method...well, that or a sewing needle, cork and matches! I had a 12 yr old come in and ask to be pierced with needles...i was over the moon with her! I lost a few customers by not having a gun...and a couple of those were for helix piercings, which a gun can seriously fuck up...

TBH, the thought of being pierced with something that was invented to tag cattle creeps me out.

Where's a good place to get it done and do I have to have boring old studs for the first few weeks?

Unless you get a really sound recommendation from here, I'd say the beauty salon bit of a reputable department store.

intastella - you seem to be suggesting that the guns are a serious health risk (namely for infection/blood borne viruses etc) so how is it that Claires are allowed to use them? Is it the case that these kind of practices/*cant think of word* venues? still aren't regulated?

I would imagine if there was a serious risk associated with the use of piercing guns they wouldn't be allowed to be used?

Do not get pierced with a gun.

If you're worried about needles being more painful, they really aren't, having been pierced with both needles and guns. What's worse, having a blunt object forced through your ear at high speed, or a surgical instrument designed to pass through the lobe most effectively to minimise damage to the surrounding flesh and minimise the risk of infection?

I had mine done in Hampstead Market some 33 years ago by some bloke selling earrings - he had a needle, all was well.

Nephew had his one done in Claire's with a gun and they did seem to take it very seriously, all the equipment was taken out of a sterilising unit and they did and offer aftercare - he's had no trouble at all. The earring was taken out of a sterile pack, and was pointed at the end, not quite a needle. They must do quite a few, so maybe their instances if infection are partly statistical.

Apart from my tragus, I've always done mine myself with a large, sterilised sewing needle, starting with a small stud. You know where you are then. ;) I've had most problems with the tragus piercing - it would not heal with the steel ring the piercer put in, it was only when I'd managed to force in a silver one instead that it sorted itself out.

Mine were done when I was 13 on my cousin's estate in Dublin by another 13 year old as we sat around a fire smoking. :D We just pushed the earrings though with our hands. It's surprisingly easy to do. I have four holes on the right hand side and 3 on the left. I also had both sides of my nose done (professionally). I never ever wear earrings now.

I've got three sets of lobe piercings, all were done with a gun as far as I can remember (it was a very long time ago). I also had my nose done with a gun, which is totally wrong apparently.

The only piercing that went wrong was one at the top of my ear, which was done with a needle. It grew over in the night and when I woke up it was all inflamed and I couldn't get the earring out. I had to go to Casualty and they yanked it out with a pair of pliers. That put me me off any more piercings.

So, er, never got round to this when most people do in their teens but am being tempted by all the lovely dangly earrings that are around at the moment. :o

Where's a good place to get it done and do I have to have boring old studs for the first few weeks? I popped into the tattoo/piercing place in Brixton the other day but they were a bit scary and I don't think they specialise in boring, piercing of the lobe. :D
Honestly, ignore all the horribleness, if you want them pierced, get them pierced. A few weeks of studs may be unrealistic though, mine always took more like a few months to settle down and not react to bog standard jewellery.

You don't have to have studs. A decent piercer should do earlobes with a needle and then put a BCR in.

All of mine were done with needles. Only the labret really hurt. I mean, all of them hurt a little bit, but the earlobe was barely noticeable.

indeed. when i got my second lobe piercing done, they did it with a needle, then bunged a 4mm tunnel in there

4mm. i already had an 8mm tunnel in the same lobe, they just pierced me again just above it so i could have a 4mm on top.
