Dyson: am I about to make an expensive mistake?

I've got a dyson and haven't had any problems with it. Don't know what model it is but it was described as being excellent at picking up animal hair, which is what I need for my herd of cats. It's a stand up model and it's quite light and easy to use. Never tried a henry or a miele so can't comment on them.

Anything by Numatic (the guys who make Henrys) is good... We have two of these and one of these, tbh I find it unlikely that any house is as dusty as a carpentry/cabinet making workshop with 12 people in it. :p
Use 'em for extraction too (for routers, sanders etc) although I now have one of these.

HEPA filtration probably a hindrance for those circumstances (but not for house use)

Can't say I'd notice :o

Mind you, when you're sanding, you want as little dust coming out the other end as possible - I wear a dust mask a lot but they're nasty, hot sweaty things and no-one wears them all day so it's important that as few particles as possible escape.

It might be an interesting experiment for you to remove the last filtration stage, if possible - I'd guess your hoover will become more powerful and you will notice less dust around. There's little point working hard to remove the absolutely tiny stuff when there's always whole load of big stuff to collect.

Been looking at the the DC22:
230473030

and the DC19:
230419035

Needs to be quite small, for easy storage, and able to deal with vast amounts of cat hair. I'm sick fed up with the crappy little hoover we have at the moment. Advice welcome :)

I think I'd want something with a bigger vacuum bag, so you didn't have to change it so often.

Not big stuff when you're extracting from a sander though, it's very fine dust and there's an awful lot of it... I use my festool extractor with tools and a numatic for grunt work though, so might have a play with that.

Over here just about every manufacturer now produces a similar bagless model, there's a part a bit like a bulky liquidiser jug which you just tip away.

Dyson cleaners are all bagless it was one of their original selling points.

I like that idea!

It sounds like a great idea doesn't it? That is until you're emptying out the bit that the dust gets sucked up into. And as you are emptying it you're getting covered in a fine layer of dust. And then you have to go and shower because it feels so disgusting. It's at that point that you think, hoover bags - what a great idea!

They're cheap and the cleaners don't get the choice

The thing is, Henrys are not that cheap. Always £90 - £100, you can buy loads of vaccum cleaners a lot cheaper than that.

There is a reason that most times you see people cleaning in offices, the vacuum is a Henry.

I don't think it is because they are the cheapest, because they aren't.

We have got Henry cleaners in a lot of rented houses, and they seem to work, and stand up to rough treatment better than some of the cheapo ones.

Giles..

I never have this problem, and the servants haven't mentioned it.

we have flagstone floors, rather than carpet.

Ooooh.:eek::eek:

*swishes skirts*

Dyson's are great. We inherited one with our house and I like the way it all locks together and stuff. It also sucks hard, which is a winner in anyone's book.

We got one of those ball ones....its sucks like nobodies business, however it does seem a little flimsy.....we shall see my mum reckons they break easy but what the hey....look better than those stupid Henry things....

"oh sh*t I really need to hoover, I hate hoovering....ahah but my hoover has a smiley face, that makes it so much more fun:rolleyes: Henry you tw*t!"

Just to repeat what you've probably seen 1000x times now...

Dysons work fantastically - when they work.

In my experience, the Miele doesn't suck quite as well (almost!) but it is indestructable at least.

Finally got sick of the old hoover at the weekend, I could get more dust and cat hair up scrabbling on me knees with a straw.

Bit the bullet and splashed out on a Miele cat and dog plus. On the strongest setting I can hardly move it across the floor, ended up doing the whole flat in record time and its never looked so clean. Recommended if you want to take the pain out of vacuuming, even if they don't come cheap. Hope it lasts years at that price.

we have 6 big hairy dogs

we havea dyson

daily hoovering is a must and tbh the dyson has never let us down

its 3 years old now and still sucks like a thai rentboy

Dysons are so overrated. They break, like, every week. And they are big and heavy.

The best hoover is Henry.

Oh and I wish that boring Dyson man with his boring voice would get off my telly 'see the thing about a hoover with 4 wheels blah blah corners blah blah'

Oh my god you must be a HOOT at parties mate.

henrys are SHIT

i've done loads of cleaning jobs and henrys were always whack.

our dyson does the job very well. one bit has broken but that's it.

Henry's have always worked fine for me and I've used them in office cleaning jobs without a problem.

I find Dysons too big and heavy (the uprights) they won't sit on the stairs (the uprights anyway) and bits break off of them all the time!
