On the whole that was a reasonably efficient win against a Cheshunt side sitting in second place in the Isthmian Premier Division. Craig Edwards' teams are generally awkward to play against, tight at the back and dangerous at set pieces.
The visitors made a strong start and got enough good efforts on target in the first twenty minutes to have made our task very difficult had we not defended with such determination. However once we took the lead through McGregor midway through the half I felt we settled down and controlled the game without too many further alarms at the back until the final minutes. Hamlet doubled the lead in first half stoppage time when Taylor headed home at the far post from a free kick near the corner flag.
It was 3-0 just before the hour when a strong counter-attacking run and perfectly timed cross from McGregor found Mills for a simple finish from six yards out. Hamlet were now well on top but couldn't find the net again and with six minutes left a careless crossfield pass by Moore gave the ball away in our own half leading to Anderson Pinto, one of our pre-season triallists from a few months back, bursting into the box to fire past Grainger. We nearly conceded a second straight from the restart when our defence got into a muddle but thankfully Debrah got across in time to clear the loose ball from in front of an empty net. The referee must have been enjoying himself as he managed to play nearly eight minutes of additional time after indicating a minimum of four but Hamlet managed to see it out without too much trouble.
Team (3-5-2): Grainger - Ming, Vint, Taylor - Moore, McGregor, Timlin(c), Sammut, Barnes - Mills, Henry. Subs: Higgs (for Sammut), Allassani (for Henry), Debrah (for Vint), Barbosa, Thomas, Embalo, Hyde (not used).
