Duffel coats

duffle coats have been back in for ages.

some people on urban really disturb me with their out-of-touchness.

they really need to sort their priorities out, tbf.

i have a dark gren duffle coat. but it's a bit too long for my liking, really, i think. and it hasn't got a toggle right at the top, so it sits flapping open at the neck, iykwim. i keep meaning to get a chunky hook-and-eye set to sew on to keep it shut. but i keep forgetting.

This could end up in the philosphy forum . . .

Is a donkey jacket a donkey jacket if it only looks like a donkey jacket, ie, that it has all the attributes of donkey-jacketness but doesn't have legal papers to support it?

As far as I remember, it simply could not be a Donkey Jacket until it complied with the standard. So if the standard no longer exists.....

Alternatively - If you are going to be freezing your arses off on a picket line, you want to know your jacket will keep you warm! :)

Either way, they have gone from proper working clothes to nothing at all. What a fall. :(

School outfitters have the best ones, I think. I got mine in Edinburgh though, and it was over 10 years ago. Sorry that's not very helpful.

Bumped because I wants one.

Are duffle coats still in, or have I missed the duffleboat?

Nope, Duffel coats are still just as fucking evil as ever.

Indeed, someone offered me one just last week. The strength of my disgusted reply maybe surprised them a bit. :D

There are loads in the shops for women at the moment, I don't know about men. Dorothy Perkins have a selection, Evans have them, New Look have them, loads of other places have them. They're not big thick things like the old-fashioned Gloverall kind which are really only suitable for the coldest days, they're just everyday jackety things. Lots of bright colours, mostly red, blue, purple and acid yellow. I bought a green one from Dorothy P.

I've got an original British Army issue one in sand colour, like Montgomery's. I bought it from an army surplus in Woolwich, years ago. It's lined with a thick padding and the exterior is constructed 36 oz melton wool and it's so warm I haven't worn it since 2003. I wanted a blue naval one but can't really justify it when I've got a pea coat. We don't get the weather in London for really warm jackets. I used to have a light green, YSL cashmere duffle with a quilted lining and it looked nice but it pilled and the lining was torn. It was shit basically.

John Partridge used to do repros but they're really silly money, almost four figures. Best place for an affordable proper duffle that would stand wear and keep you warm would be a military surplus outlet.

And they're heavy, fuck yes. I forgot to mention that. I reckon you're better off with a down jacket if it's warmth and light practicality you need. A serious duffle is only really appropriate if you're spending all day outdoors in winter and if you're doing that I wouldn't bother with a duffle I'd use more modern kit by Filson or Woolrich. Much nicer.

Bump for the 2011 duffle hunters!

I spent most of last winter searching for a dark green duffle coat to no avail. They seem to be even more ubiquitous this season but I've still not had any luck finding the perfect one. I've been looking in second hand shops round Camden Stables and Brick Lane and had a look in some high street shops, plenty of duffle coats, but they're either the wrong colour or don't fit. I am being quite specific though... Is there anywhere else around London that's worth a look?
