ive just bought a some pretty tasty dubstep

Dub & Orang, make sure you get down early to DMZ, the place fills up really quickly.

Don't forget your fake ID's either. :D

Does anyone know the date for the next one?

Ive been listening to a lot of this stuff lately but never been to a dubstep night. TBH I couldnt imagine hearing this in a club or dancing to it. I stick the headphones on or if the neighbours are out whack up the stereo and sit back with a spliff.

But I would like to hear it out, on a big soundsystem, and see just how people dance to this stuff (im more used to flailing around to gabber or dnb/jungle!)

I cant ever see there being a dubstep night where I live but gonna be visiting some friends soon so does Anyone know of any nights on in Leeds 6 -12th June, Newcastle 12th - 15/16th June or Glasgow 15/16th- 20th June?

Going to see Venetian Snares in Leeds 9th June :D (not thread related I know!)

It's drum and bass with authentic reggae samples, am I missing something?

??

If so, let me know.

yes you are. there is plenty of dnb around with "authentic reggae samples" but that's something completely different to what this thread is about. check out the links people have put up.

i'm playing a Dubstep cd a friend made me. the one i'm playing at the mo is 'the judgement' but fuck knows who it's by, i can't read his writing on the playlist.

i like it. it sounds less like old type of Dub than i thought it would (if that makes sense). i love the squidgy noises.

edit: 'ello miles! see you next week for a picnic on a path. :)

it's nothing like drum and bass, it's about a quarter the speed and often doesn't have breakbeats

OK, cool, will have to check it out...

actually, it reminds me more of the heavier/bassier end of two-step Garage than Dub...

thats where it all started...changed a lot since...dubstep is a bit of a lame name really - ammunition records used it on one press release and its stuck ever since

yeh, i think the name's a bit rubbish. love the music though.

i've listened to this comp twice now - it's like going back in time to the underground two-step scene in the 90s.

but with added woofers. :D

Well, Dubversion, you could do worse than listen to my radio show on Thursday where I'll surely showcase some good stuff. I recommend:

Skream - Skreamizm Vol. 1
Boxcutter - Oneiric
Vex'd - Degenerate
Burial - Burial
All the stuff on DMZ
Anything by DJ Distance
N-Type's EP on Dub Police 'Way of the Dub'
Pinch - Qawwali
Anything by Elemental, his live set from Noir in Bristol is probably the best intro to Dubstep of anything I've heard. It's 64 mins long, maybe I could send it to you or anyone else that wants it
Toasty - Knowledge (/remix by vex'd)
Check out Rinse FM, all the big dubstep faces have shows on it. Skream's is unfornutately at exactly the same time as the Breezeblock, the only r1 show i know of playing dubstep

I wonder why dubstep has such a strong Middle Eastern influence? Most of the music is, presumably, made in London and yet some tracks wouldn't sound out of place in a souk.

I think theres an idea underlying in some dubstep camps that it should be, to some degree, meditative. I dont know exactly what that entails, but it seems to be chest-warping sub-bass and a piccolo :)

There is something quite restrained about dubstep though isn't there? Like a storm contained within a Thermos flask IYSWIM

id liked to have done a dubstep set at offline but ed never PMd me back :o

I tend not to play any dubstep at Offline, it just isn't the right place for it. Most of it is too sombre and subtle to work at Offline ... but you could prove me wrong :)

but the other thing is, dubstep isnt very annoying. it doesnt grate on the ears (unless you're one of the poor fellows who just simply refuses to get over the fact that its 2-step, and holds some snobbish grudge against the form) and soaks up loads of energy, iyswim. i only ever went to offline once but i remember that fast music wasnt really a good idea, no space to dance properly. dubstep doesnt need that.

Dubstep isn't annoying, but it can be dark and moody. I don't think it's easy to get a drunken crowd at the Albert/Jamm moving to dupstep, unless they've come to hear that specific genre. What really works at Offline is music with vocals, whether that's indie, funk, reggae, whatever.

I don't think the tempo of music at Offline is a problem. I've played dnb on occasion and it always goes down well. The mood of the music is more important –*anything too introspective just doesn't work as well.
