Dubai: the most bonkers skyscraper ever

I don't, but I still think building skyscrapers in a resource-poor desert is a complete waste of money.

It is self sufficient, it's technology will filter down to everyone, Solar electricity works best under a desert sun.

I personally think canary wharf and the gherkin are a waste of resources.

Yes, they all are - all these unnecessarily huge big cock show off buildings.

I bloody love skyscrapers me.

I just want to live in one, with pod cars which automatically drive you to work and back and park you directly outside your floor like in minority report.

I think all those rotating floors will be a fucking nightmare to maintain & hideously expensive in a location exposed to salt and sand storms etc. Still, that's not necessarilly a problem if you've got oil money coming out of yuor ears.

All those turbines will probably be rather noisy too, I imagine.

Still, a nice concept.

Why not? in places where land is limited they make sense to me, especially as I'd imagine theres economies of scale to consider, transport etc.

Aren't most of the skyscrapers in Dubai built to proclaim wealth or attract tourism, rather than for any practical reasons?

Oh I agree about Dubai (they're also built by appalingly treated workers) but thought we were talking about Skyscrapers in general.

There's something about the way Dubai does these big shiny trinkets and everyone coos and stuff and turns a blind eye to their general atrocious behaviour in other regards that reminds me of some other regime that used to be good at engineering and bold forms and zeppelins and stuff.

I think there are a lot better, less hysterical, comparisons tbh.

Saw a thing about this ages ago.

It made me think – despite its grotesqueness, these projects will be where the progress is made in terms of architectural-eco sustainability. There are some great ideas in this build design, that hopefully can be scaled down and utilised in other ways.

They're all shiny

This one isn't remarkably shiny.

Although, there will inevitably be an amount of shininess because of the amount of windows needed. Unless 70% of the building is in complete darkness.
