drum 'n' bass recommendations

i saw london electricity and the bays at glastonbury last weekend, both doing live drum and bass, and both excellent.

im buying tracks on hospital, liquid v and moving shadow mostly - but oh my gosh... im beginning to believe that the future is not on vinyl, but on a stage!!

Defo back up the Bassbin recommendation- that album's wicked. Skitty's tune us ace- in fact almost all of Skitty's production is brilliant, plus he's equally adept at making darkside tearers as deeper dubby numbers (and he's a thoroughly nice bloke to boot!).

I'd also recommend keeping an eye out for stuff by Chris SU and SKC- again, both make some wicked dark stuff, but their deeper/more soulful efforts are really nice. They've got a collaboration called 'What's Happening?' forthcoming on Hospital (although I don't know when it's due out), and Chris' tune on Obsessions ('Just the One') has just promo'd. :)

For some reason I haven't been listening to drum and bass for the last couple of years or so. Last thing I liked was DJ Marky and XRS, and before that some compilation on Hospital (Marcus Intelex etc.)

Used to love Goldie circa Timeless, and LTJ Bukem.
Is there anything about now that might float my boat? Suggestions appreciated.

if that was your bag then i think you should enjoy high contrast - high society

Skitty is awesome, i met him once at a night in birmingham, throughly nice bloke!! :)

Fav 3 tunes of his -

Fall Down
One Cut (tech itch remix)
Stand and Deliver

no i do as well
heard the first few when they started and kinda put them aside out of my 'tune/label vision'
not my bag

have heard one or 2 decent one's tho since - still not up for buying them

Having stopped buying jungle a while ago I was recently in a shoe shop in Kingston and the J Majik remix of Space Invader came on the shop stereo. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up and my spine started tingling. And I remembered how fucking good the music is. In fact they're starting again just thinking about it.

Going to record my Jungle Urburn CD when I get back tonight I think.

Keep an eye out for Breakin' Rules, Babylon Dub and Ghost- all cracking tunes still to come. He's playing at our night here in Bristol in August too, plug plug... ;)

Anyone heard the new album, it's out this week I think?

Just bought the new pendulum album today and listening to it now. So far think it's fantastic, got quite a varied bunch of a styles on the album ranging from their breaks collaboration with the freestylers, a couple of quite clowny tunes but also some quite rocky tunes and a fair bit of darker bass heavy stuff.

Definitely recommend getting it, being tipped by many to be one of the biggest dnb albums to do well commercially in a long time. New single Slam played by Jo Whiley (SCAB!) this morning on radio 1 shows its getting a lot more airplay than most other drum n bass at the moment (although I know airplay doesn't necessarily mean quality!). Definitely goes well with a lot of their earlier tunes such as Vault, Another Planet, Back To You and Spiral

All in all... pendulum, well worth a listen.

Any other views from those who have heard the album?

i've only heard clips of the album and to be honest it's not my bag. there are a couple of pendulum tracks i really like - particularly "vault" and especially "back to you" (fucking excellent tune IMO) but in the main i find them too cheesy and obvious, far too "main room" IYKWIM.

that collab woith the freestylers is fucking awful, IMO. cheese of the highest order.

Fair comment, a lot of their earlier stuff I prefer to what they're doing now, tunes such as "vault" and "back to you" seem a lot edgier and groundbreaking in the scene but I think as the biggest newcomers in drum n bass for a while pendulum have been under pressure to produce commercial, "main room" tunes and like it or not it seems to be paying off with their increased popularity both on the dance floor and on the radio.

Having listened to the whole album now, got a few criticisms to make. Firstly the tunes aren't all mixed together into an album long mix. To be honest, I think although this fits into the popular norm of having 10-16 stand-alone tracks on the album, I don't think it works well on a drum and bass album, much better as one continuous mix.
Secondly, they've also put the original "Another Planet" on the album which having been rinsed to fuck last year, I've quite frankly heard enough of. Would have been much better to put the darker remix of "Another Planet" on there which frankly is far superior and hasn't even been released on any format yet...

Apart from that, still a good effort. Should do well in the mainstream charts,
still not as good as some of my personal favourites though such as their earlier stuff or more recently subfocus, high contrast or friction.

Hope you bought some CDRs as well.

Where's me choons ya bastard?!

to recommend
this mix by john b.

not your usual drum n bass mix, lots of stuff that isn't strictly dnb but fits the vibe/tempo....even has a track from the cure in the mix.

I recommend:

Aphrodite
Dieselboy
Artificial Intellegence
Klute
Trace
Subfocus

....btw - I HATE Pendulum. Cheesy jump-up shite.
