Driving the car to India

a friend drove hsi citroen to Pakistan a few years ago... via switzerland, Italy, slovenia, croatia, bulgaria, romania, turkey, iran and then pakistan.

he wanted to go to china but got sidetracked. too much opium he said!

he drove with two other male friends... his grilfriend stopped in Turkey and then met them in Pakistan. iran, i suppose, would have been tricky.

The lonely planet /rough guide, I can't remember which one does a guide to India over land, called Istanbul to Katmandu. I think the best time in there was 7 days, but I am not sure about that.
The only person I know who has done it took six weeks, and did it in a dodge van.
Good luck.

Seven people in a car driving to India??!!

Forget about the tribesmen; you'll murder each other long before the trip is through.
and if that doesn't happen there is little chance of surviving on the roads once you get there!!!

people drive like bloody mad over there...there is no way you could survive a roundabout!

good luck to you H (unless of course you have driven there before!)

Iran would be fine. My mums been to Muslim countrys and said they're more poilite if anything. The thing to remember is a little respect for the culture ie long skirts and a head scarf will ensure smiling faces in almost all muslim streets.

Sounds an crazy idea, or a fantastic one if you plan it properly and think about the practicalities....

Give yerself a few months, I'd say, and I think with any more than 2 people per car you'd be driving each other bonkers before long...

People do drive to africa etc. in ordinary cars eg. Paris to Dakar old banger rally ... but then they usually have some mechanical backup.

Anything's possible if you've got £ though....

Make sure you learn how to change a wheel and change the oil and do some basic repairs

of course it's fine! i'm originally from a Muslim country.

but my mate for example was bathing in his shorts in a lake somewhere in Iran and got hassle from the police. and it's not too comfortable for a foreign girlfriend a accompanying an unmarried man. would they be able to sleep together in one sleeping bag by the side of the road? I dunno.

Not impossible, but not in 10 days, that would be impossible. I reckon it'd take 2-3 just for Pakistan on a good day. If you can do more than about 30mph on these roads I would be amazed. Toyota Land Cruiser might do it?

You are looking at lots of problems here some are harder than others.

The 1st is the road conditions. They are verging from bad to truly horrific in India. I suggest that that is also true of Pakistan. Iran and Turkey are probably better but don't count on it.

Then there is the small case of never attending the Dr Death school of insane driving. The further east you go the worse it will get. Indian roads are not for the feint hearted. I lost count of the number of 'arggg' moments I had.

All those roads will cause some serious stress on that car. Once you hit India, your going to have get it fixed, I reckon the shocks will go 1st, 7ppl and all the luggage? Guess how many places will have part for your car and know how to fix it? Still, as you cant get anything done in India quickly anyhow, I'd say thats the last of your problems.

The cost of petrol might be prohibitive. Its about 43rs litre in India at the moment.

I do a bit of cab driving and have a good powerful car (Renault21). There are 7 of us planning to travel and when you look at the price of airfares driving has to be an option, I was planning on 3 days to the Iranian border, 3 days through Iran and 3 days through Pakistan plus a day to spare. The Iran Pakistan and Pakistan India borders could prove problematic. We intend to use the car in India.
